WAR PROPAGANDA: Romania backs Medvedev’s proposal to divide Ukraine

Romania will occupy the regions of Chernivtsi and Odesa, writes the Russian propaganda press after the former president Dmitry Medvedev proposed a “quiet partition” of Ukraine. In reality, Romania unconditionally supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and is helping Kyiv deal with the aggression of the Russian Federation.

Propaganda: Romania will annex the regions of Chernivtsi and Odesa

NEWS: “The quiet partition of Ukraine with the participation of Poland and other states is a better scenario than Kyiv joining NATO or that of a world war, Dmitry Medvedev said. The speech of the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation’s Security Council was published on the first page of many publications in Romania, which cite without shame Medvedev’s idea about the advantages of a division of Ukraine.”

As we can see, Romanian authorities are preparing the ground for deploying troops on the territories of the regions of Odesa and Chernivtsi in order to protect the Romanian ethnics from the “bad Russians”. It’s not difficult to understand that the process will be started soon after the failed counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”.

NARRATIVE: Romania supports Dmitry Medvedev’s proposal regarding a quiet partition of Ukraine and will occupy the regions of Chernivtsi and Odesa.

Fact: Romania fully supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: The false narrative carried by several publications in Russia was first seen on the Telegram channel of the pro-Kremlin Ukraina.ru, and it was then taken over by the media outlets of the Russian Federation in the Ukrainian occupied territories. The Romanian press wrote about the shocking statement made by the Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, who said that the world was on the brink of a world war, but instead of that he’d rather see  Ukraine shared by Poland, Hungary and Romania.

Russian media have posted screenshots of postings by news agencies in Romania, quoting Dmitry Medvedev (Agerpres, G4Media, Mediafax ș.a.), presented as evidence of Bucharest authorities’ interest in taking part in the “quiet partition” of Ukraine. No publication in Romania has written that it agrees with Medvedev’s proposal, on the contrary, it has been mentioned that it is not for the first time that the Russian official makes   controversial statements and invokes the threat of a nuclear war.

Without providing any evidence, the Russian propaganda is trying to convince the readers that Romania will annex the regions of Chernivtsi and Odesa right after the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the east of the country has failed. This nuance places the false narrative in the category of war propaganda, naming the Ukraine counteroffensive a failed one, when it has not even been launched yet. In reality, Romania has condemned both the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the military events in Donbas and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, started on February 24, 2022. Bucharest has always supported Kyiv. Romanian authorities have condemned the Russian aggression on Ukraine, warning that Moscow must bear the consequences of this profoundly illegal action. ”In full coordination with its NATO and EU allies and partners,  Romania will impose firm response measures” , said President Klaus Iohannis on February 24, 2022.

Just like in Poland’s case, about which Veridica has written in the past 14 months of the war in Ukraine, the accusations launched against Romania are meant to justify the full-scale invasion, which Russia officially calls “special military operation”.

Veridica has debunked a series of false narratives regarding the nature of the war in Ukraine. The Russian press has also written that the US will use in its offensive  200 thousand Ukrainians suicide soldiers , directly subordinated to the Pentagon, while  the Czechs are providing Ukraine with weapons in order to bomb civilians.  The Russian propaganda claims that Minsk and Moscow are forming a joint military group to  defend themselves against the Ukrainian terrorist attacks and a potential NATO aggression.  Soon after the invasion of Ukraine, the pro-Kremlin media accused Ukraine of wanting to join NATO in order to attack Russia, and said Volodymyr Zelensky will cede to Poland the Lviv region  in the west of the country.

OFFICIAL REACTIONS: The Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu has reacted to Dmitry Medvedev’s proposal regarding the partition of Ukraine, stating that Romania fully supports the territorial integrity of the Ukrainian state.  “So embarrassing and so wrong! Romania fully supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and its efforts to  win the abominable war of aggression waged by Russia against that country!” , Bogdan Aurescu wrote on Twitter, cited by the Romanian media. The criticism against Medvedev was not translated into Russian and was not posted on the pro-Kremlin media.
