The Ukrainian authorities are going to organize a full-scale genocide of the Russian people and are planning to kill 5,000 people every day, according to Russian state media, which misquotes the adviser to the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak. In fact, he only talked about the Russian military who invaded Ukraine and must be stopped, without mentioning the Russian people or the Russian speakers in the Ukrainian regions.

Russian Propaganda: Kyiv threatens the Russian people with a full-scale genocide

NEWS: “The Kiev regime has crossed all boundaries and intends to organize a genocide of the Russian people. The need for a genocide of such proportions and carried out very quickly was argued by Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Zelensky administration. On a TV show called “We are Ukraine”, the Nazi called for the destruction of thousands of Russians a day. He says that this is the only way Kyiv will be able to achieve victory in the war.

“We must have not 1000, but 2500, 3000 or even 5000 funerals for Russia per day.  This is the only way this war can end. Only destruction, destruction and again destruction”, Podoliak said, asking for new tanks, planes and missiles for Ukraine.

Podolyak’s words were commented by publicist Armen Gasparian. He believes that Ukrainian nationalists surpass the Hitlerite fascists in their wickedness. “Not even the Nazi Einsatzgruppen, back in the day, would plan such terrible killings.”

NARRATIVE: Ukraine is going to organize a genocide, planning to kill 5,000 Russians every day

The statements made by Zelensky's adviser were about the Russian soldiers that invaded the Ukrainian state

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: In reality, the adviser to the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak, analyzed the possibility of an end to the war in Ukraine through the prism of the dynamics of the fighting on the front. He said that Moscow had brought a lot of soldiers to the territory of Ukraine, mobilized in the fall of last year, therefore, in order to achieve a victory in the war, the Ukrainian army should kill between 2,500 and 3,000 occupiers per day,  not 1,000 as is the case now. This calculation was made by Podolyak at the request of Ukrainian journalists who asked him when the war would end. The estimate of current Russian losses is Podolyak's and Veridica could not verify it with independent sources.

The Russian state media took Podolyak's statement out of context and failed to mention that he was talking about the Russian troops arriving on Ukrainian territory.

Zelensky's adviser was therefore not talking about the Russian people or Russophones, but about the need to make Ukrainian defense more efficient against the invaders sent to Ukraine by the Kremlin. Russian propaganda portrays the invaders as victims of Kyiv's actions, and Ukraine is shown as a party to the conflict that is not defending itself, but only aggressing the Russian people. The purpose of this propaganda narrative is to justify the war in Ukraine and picture the Ukrainian state as a danger to Russia's existence.

It should be noted that Ukraine's actions correspond to the norms of international law. In accordance with the UN Charter, Ukraine exercises its inherent right of self-defense  against the Russian aggression. According to a Council of Europe report, Ukraine has the right to liberate all the occupied territories within its internationally recognized borders and regain full control over them. Self-defense and the liberation of one's own territories cannot take place without killing the soldiers of the aggressor state.

Allegations of genocide carried out by Ukraine have no legal grounds and there is no evidence to support them. In reality, it is Russia that has committed war crimes on the territory of Ukraine. Moscow is bombing Ukrainian towns and has destroyed numerous civilian targets, including apartment buildings, schools, power plants, etc. The crimes are documented by journalists and independent investigators. Some evidence (satellite images, drone footage) unequivocally proves that Russian soldiers committed war crimes in Kyiv, Kherson or Kharkiv region. Ukraine has called on the International Criminal Court and international organizations to send investigators to gather evidence of war crimes.

Veridica has debunked a series of false narratives that were launched to exonerate Russia and blame Ukraine or the West for war crimes. According to the Russian propaganda,  the EU is hiding its involvement in crimes committed  on the territory of Ukraine by establishing a special tribunal.

The Russian press also wrote that American experts believe that the news about atrocities committed by Russian soldiers in Ukraine is Ukrainian propaganda fabrication . The propaganda narrative according to which the UN has admitted that  Ukrainian soldiers are bombing schools  or using them for military purposes has also been debunked.
