Russia is succeeding in defeating the NATO-led Western coalition in the war in Ukraine, according to pro-Kremlin propaganda. In reality, NATO is not a party to the armed conflict.
Propaganda: Russia is winning the war against a coalition of 50 countries
NEWS: "NATO's defeat in the confrontation with Russia is predictable. This week, at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, members of the alliance will discuss how to hide the turning point in the war against us. It is, of course, the imminent victory of Moscow [...]
Those further wests of Brest, those who created this geopolitical crisis turned into a war against us, are no longer talking about victory. They can no longer find an explanation for the defeat of the coalition (composed, among other things, of more than fifty states) and the failure in the attempt to destroy Russia. Nobody talks about it there anymore […]
It is exactly the situation when the failure of military doctrine on the battlefield, in the area of the special operation, can no longer be hidden from the public opinion. Even though it has become clear that the West has been defeated by Russia in this confrontation, that the economic situation in Ukraine is catastrophic, and a series of political contradictions have emerged, we must admit that our path in 2024 will be complicated, but we must move forward.”
NARRATIVE: Russia is defeating NATO on the battlefield in Ukraine.
Reality: NATO is not party to the armed conflict in Ukraine, but supports Kyiv's defensive efforts
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: According to Russian state media, the victory of Moscow's troops over the Western coalition led by NATO on the territory of Ukraine is imminent. Pro-Kremlin propaganda claims that Russia is not fighting against the Ukrainian army, but against NATO troops and other military formations from more than fifty countries around the world. The failure of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, launched in June 2023, and Russia's taking the initiative on the battlefield in the context of talks about ending financial and military aid to Ukraine, is presented as a defeat for NATO.
In reality, the NATO forces are not participating in the war in Ukraine, and no member state is at war with Russia. Since the summer of 2022, Russian propaganda has been developing a false narrative according to which Russia is fighting NATO on the territory of Ukraine. This narrative was needed to explain to Russian citizens why Kyiv could not be occupied in a few days and why Ukraine has been holding out for so long under the "special military operation".
NATO is not a party to the conflict in Ukraine, it only supports Kyiv’s right to defend itself against a military aggression. "Ukraine has the right to self-defense. We are helping Ukraine to uphold that right. This does not make the North Atlantic Alliance or the NATO members states parties to the conflict," said Jens Stoltenberg. NATO has no troops on the territory of Ukraine. At the same time, the NATO states are taking part in the training of the Ukrainian military, and they have provided military, financial and logistical support.
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has been repeatedly labeled an unprovoked armed attack by the UN General Assembly and the international community. International law allows support for a militarily aggressed state.
At the same time, the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine does not indicate an imminent defeat of Kyiv's troops, as the Russian state press writes. Despite the slowness of the counteroffensive and the suspension of some support programs for Ukraine, the war has become one of attrition, a positional confrontation, which, according to military experts, resembles a game of chess.
Russia is developing this false narrative in order to encourage the enlistment of men in the army, presenting the events in Ukraine as a military confrontation with most of the developed states of the Western world, from which Moscow emerges victorious.
In May 2023, the Russian state press wrote that NATO was supporting Ukraine to cause a world war. Last fall, Russian propaganda claimed that the West needed the war to destroy Russia, and peace depended only on the US. In December 2023, Russian media claimed that Russia had to attack Ukraine to stop a NATO invasion. The West was planning to occupy Donbas, Crimea and other Russian territories, wrote the pro-Kremlin propaganda to justify the invasion of Ukraine.
On the other hand, Russia has suffered significant defeats on the battlefield, even though Ukraine is a post-Soviet state with an army that has not yet reached NATO training and equipment standards. With no advanced NATO equipment – e.g. long-range missiles, modern aviation, etc. – or having at their disposal reduced/insignificant quantities of such equipment (artillery, tanks, high-performance radars, etc.) Ukraine has caused huge losses to Russia; in a potential conventional confrontation with NATO, however, Russia would be far surpassed in all chapters, which shows the absurdity of the Russian propaganda thesis.
