The West is investigating the war crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists, the Russian media writes, even quoting a press release of the US Department of State. However, the document refers to the war crimes committed by the Russian army, condemned by all the major Western chancelleries.
NEWS: “The USA, the European Union and the United Kingdom have created a special committee charged with investigating the “atrocities” in Ukraine, reads the official website of the US Department of State. “The European Union, the United States and the United Kingdom have today announced the setup of the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group (ACA). The Group will consolidate the efforts of the EU, the USA and the UK in holding accountable the people responsible for the atrocities in Ukraine”, the official website of the US Department of State reads.
Previously, Russia launched a special operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, said he was forced to resort to this operation in order to protect the population of Donbas against genocide. According to the Russian head of state, the citizens of Donbas were subjected to repression and attacks from the Ukrainian armed forces. In particular, the Russian leader referred to the atrocities committed by Ukrainian nationalists”.
NARRATIVE: The West is investigating the “atrocities” committed by Ukrainian nationalists on the territory of Ukraine.
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: At first glance, the article seems to provide information, but is in fact a piece of war propaganda, constructed by omitting important excerpts from the press release issued by the US Department of State. “This joint initiative will directly support the efforts of the War Crimes Units of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine (OPG) to document, preserve, and analyze evidence of war crimes and other atrocities committed in Ukraine”.
The Russian media doesn’t write anything about the atrocities committed by the Russian army in Ukraine, nor does it provide a hyperlink to the English-language press release, merely reinterpreting it through the lens of the Kremlin’s false narratives which it disseminated over the years.
“It is critical to ensure that all those responsible for the terrible atrocities committed during the unprovoked Russian military aggression in Ukraine are brought to justice”, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, who helped set up ACA, said in turn.
Therefore, the purpose of this Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group is to hold accountable the Russian military who committed war crimes on the territory of Ukraine. The messages and statements of Western officials make no reference to the atrocities of Ukrainian nationalists.
Other media institutions in Russia, including TASS, have deliberately mistranslated the press release published by the US Department of State, arguing “the Group will document war crimes and other atrocities in Ukraine”, eliminating all references to Russia or Russian troops.
Towards the end, the article also reiterates false narratives about the genocide against the Russian-speaking population in Donbas, about Russia’s special operation and about Ukrainian nationalists who committed war crimes in Eastern Ukraine. In fact, Russia launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on February 24, destroying towns, shelling military as well as civilian infrastructure, killing women, children and elderly.
Certain evidence (satellite footage, drone recordings) unequivocally confirm that Russian soldiers committed war crimes in the Kyiv oblast. Ukraine has called on the International Criminal Court and international organizations to send their teams of investigators as soon as possible to collect on-scene evidence of the war crimes.
Veridica has already debunked several false narratives, according to which French gendarmes will cover up the traces of Ukraine’s war crimes in Bucha while Ukrainian nationalists will open fire on civilians again. In April, Russian news agencies wrote that American experts believed that the reports of the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine were fabricated by Ukrainian propaganda. The propaganda narrative according to which the UN admitted that Ukrainians are bombing schools or using them for military purposes and that Zelensky announced the organization of a new genocide against the Russian speakers in Kharkiv and Donbas was equally disproved.
