The United States and its Western allies have been arming Ukraine since 2014 in order for it to start a war with Russia, writes the Russian press, which resumes, in another form, the narrative according to which the West and Ukraine are responsible for the war. In reality, Ukraine was invaded by Russia, and the provision of arms to Kyiv was a reaction to Russia’s aggression.
NEWS: “The conflict in Ukraine started in 2014 after the Euromaidan, and the US has been fueling it since then, the former chairman of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), Oskar Lafontaine, told Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten in an interview. According to the former head of this party, Washington and its allies have been arming Ukraine and systematically preparing Kyiv for confrontation with Russia, and the result was that Ukraine actually became a member of NATO […]
[…]
At the same time, Washington has failed to achieve its goals against Russia. Lafontaine believes that the US admits it’s broken its teeth because it knows that Russia as a nuclear state cannot be defeated militarily. Moreover, the anti-Russian sanctions hit the West like a boomerang, he said”.
NARRATIVES: The United States has been arming Ukraine since 2014 to push it to war against Russia.
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: Since the invasion of Ukraine on February 24 this year, Russian state media has been increasingly resorting to quoting journalists, politicians or cultural figures politically or ideologically close to the Kremlin to illustrate their own propaganda narratives. Oskar Lafontaine is a far-left politician with a pro-Russian and anti-American stance. He has participated in a series of meetings with Russian experts and politicians or with pro-Kremlin, pro-Russian, communist-oriented Donbass separatist leaders, where topics such as “Nazism in Ukraine”, “the consolidation of the communist movement around the world”, “the creation of communist resistance battalions” were approached. He is an increasingly marginalized politician in Germany.
Oskar Lafontaine resumes one of Russia’s false narratives , launched before the invasion of Ukraine, that NATO and the US had been preparing for several years a war against the Russian people. The preparations allegedly started in 2014, after a “coup d'état” had taken place in Ukraine.
In reality, there was no coup d'état in Ukraine, and the change of power occurred after a series of street riots, followed, after the flight of former President Viktor Yanukovych, by parliamentary and presidential elections, legally organized and recognized as such by the international community.
In fact, the West began sending defensive weaponry to Ukraine in the run-up to the war and amid concerns expressed by intelligence services abroad that Moscow was preparing to invade. Armament deliveries on a larger scale did not occur until after the February 24 invasion, and even then, at first there were just some individual pieces of equipment and portable weapons; only after a few months were heavy equipment also sent. In other words, the Western support for Ukraine since 2014 has been linked to the Kremlin-funded war in Donbass, and the provision of large-scale lethal weaponry to Russia's large-scale unprovoked aggression. So, Russian propaganda, citing pro-Kremlin politicians, is trying to achieve a narrative detour: the cause is turned into the consequence.Lafontaine's messages were picked up by a number of Russian publications, which write that the United States has attacked Russia – though, indeed, this is happening on the territory of Ukraine - and that Moscow's war is one of defense. Fortunately, the Russian press writes, Moscow has managed to put up a heroic resistance so far, and “the USA has broken its teeth” on the territory of Ukraine. It is not clear from this narrative why Russia is present on the territory of a sovereign state called Ukraine. In reality, Russia has attacked Ukraine, and the Russian aggression has been condemned by most countries around the world. Despite the numerous contacts between representatives of the Western political environment and the Kremlin leader, Putin did not give up the idea of invading Ukraine in order to occupy it.141 member states of the UN General Assembly voted for a resolution condemning the Russian aggression in Ukraine . Only 5 states, including Russia, voted against. With the help of specialists from abroad, Kyiv is collecting evidence to prove that Russia has committed war crimes on the territory of Ukraine and that it is a terrorist state. A number of international mechanisms have been launched to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. The UN called on Russia to cease fire, not to attack civilians and non-military infrastructure. In November, the General Assembly voted a resolution in favor of creating a compensation mechanism for the destruction - of human and material nature - caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine .
Veridica has debunked a series of false narratives made up by the Russian media regarding the nature of the war in Ukraine, according to which the inhabitants of the Zaporizhzhya region are waiting for the liberation of the cities of Mykolaiv, Kharkiv and Odesa from the Ukrainian Nazis. The pro-Kremlin media has also written that due to Kyiv’s neo-Nazi propaganda, Ukrainians don’t understand that Russia is here to liberate, not occupy them. In November 2021, the Russian propaganda tried to convince the public opinion that Moscow was rallying troops on the Ukrainian border in order to defend itself against a possible NATO aggression, having to save Donbass from the genocide staged by Ukraine and the West.
