CONTEXT: The narrative presenting Romania as a Western colony, where decisions are made exclusively in Brussels and Washington with the aim of physically and morally destroying the country, has been circulating in the local media since the 1990s, with its roots in anti-capitalist propaganda prior to the 1989 Revolution. It is currently used by supporters of the sovereigntist movement and those nostalgic for communism, and is strongly fueled by Russian propaganda. Aiming to undermine trust in organizations such as the EU or NATO, the narrative is used mainly for electoral purposes, but also to justify Russia's brutal actions in Eastern Europe, in countries such as Moldova and Georgia, which it claims to be protecting from the "Western aggression."
In this case, the promoter of the narrative is none other than conspiracy theorist Adrian Cacovean, a former surgeon who switched to homeopathy. He is a well-known opponent of vaccination and allopathic medicine in general, claiming that viruses do not exist and that the COVID pandemic was just an invention of the global cabal. Paradoxically, however, in March 2020, shortly after its outbreak in Romania, Cacovean was marketing a supposed medicine against the coronavirus , a move that prompted the authorities to open a criminal case for fraud.
Last September, picking up on a false narrative that had been circulating since 2021, Cacovean claimed that Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Meta, was aware of the negative effects of Covid vaccines and censored the truth about them, and in May this year he promoted fake news claiming that Ilie Bolojan, then interim president, would reduce the number of days off granted to employees in Romania , even though the initiative was nothing more than a serious drafting error in a bill by members of parliament from the SOS Romania party, fellow sovereignists of Dr. Cacovean.
