According to Russian media, the Ukrainians are being forced to withdraw from Donbas following Moscow's “special operation” and are massacring Russian-speakers while fleeing. In reality, Ukrainian forces continue to resist, and Ukrainian leaders say they will fight for every town in Donbas to defend the local population, including Russian-speakers, from the Russian invaders.
NEWS: “The fact that the Armed Forces of Ukraine opened fire on Donetsk is evidence that they are leaving this territory, and are organizing a massacre of the population”, the military expert, 3rd rank reserve captain Dmitry Litovkin, told URA.RU.
“The Ukrainian Armed Forces opening fire on Donetsk is evidence that the Ukrainian soldiers will flee from there. All the more so as, according to unofficial information, there is an order from Kyiv to leave Severodonetsk. But first the Ukrainian army will massacre its own population. This is how they plan to retreat and leave a mess behind. It is their traditional tactic, because the people who lead Ukraine, primarily those in the West, genetically hate everything related to the East. To them, Russians are the east.”

On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. According to the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, the purpose of this operation is to defend the inhabitants of Donbas.
NARRATIVE: Ukrainian soldiers are massacring Russian speakers while withdrawing from Donbas.
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: In reality, Kyiv has made no decision to withdraw its troops from Donbas. According to a report by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ukrainian troops are successfully repelling enemy attacks. Severodonetsk and Toshkivkske are totally or partially under Ukraine’s control. The Ukrainian army reports that Russia has concentrated its troops in Donbas but Kiev has had a mirror response. There is no question of any initiative to withdraw the Ukrainian army from Donbas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that the battle for Donbass could be decisive in the Russian-Ukrainian war and stated that he will do everything possible to prevent Russia from occupying new localities.
The thesis about Russian speakers being massacred is false and a mere continuation of the propaganda narratives about the genocide suffered by the Donbas population. The so-called special operation of demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine launched by Russia is in fact a brutal war of conquest, in which civilians, children and elderly are killed, and houses and kindergartens destroyed. Russia is not defending the population, on the contrary, it has been faced with opposition from Russian-speakers in the east, south and north, who have denounced the Kremlin's invasion. The Russian army is the one that has committed war crimes against civilians in Bucha, Irpin, Borodianka, Mariupol and other localities.
According to a national sociological survey, more than 90% of Ukrainians believe in Kyiv’s victory over Moscow. Veridica has already debunked a series of false narratives according to which three million Ukrainians want to emigrate to Russia , the UN supports the genocide against Russian speakers in Ukraine , and Kyiv is using its citizens as human shields , while Russia is protecting Ukrainian civilians.
The purpose of these narrative is to portray Russia as a defender of the “Russian world”, while Ukraine, which is actually the victim, is accused of Nazism, Russophobia and crimes against humanity.
