Western propaganda is making Ukrainians self-destruct, and Russia needs to stop them through “de-Nazification”, pro-Kremlin media writes.

Propaganda: Ukrainians are manipulated by Western-funded propaganda, and Russia needs to save them and wake them up

NEWS: “[Ukrainians’] patriotism looks more like self-assertion at the Russians’ expense: they’re trying to take down Pushkin’s statue and replace it with a new one devoted to nationalist murderers […] Instead of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, they are now building monuments honoring collaborators of Nazi Germany […].

Most Ukrainians are in a state of permanent intellectual hibernation, which is backed by a strong propaganda campaign. This is like Swiss clockwork for them – it works 24 hours a day. Their Western masters are carefully monitoring this mechanism, earmarking a great deal of funds to maintain the disinformation.

[…]

Ukrainian Nazism has now taken on an even more disgusting and unconceivable form – self-destruction, which is one step away from political cannibalism. They no longer fear anything. Ukrainian authorities are unaware of what they have created, bringing Ukrainians to the brink of pre-designed self-destruction. The Ukrainian people must be saved not just through de-Nazification, but also by turning everyone’s minds towards the Russian World. Otherwise, Ukrainians might soon disappear. They are held hostage in their own state, and Ukraine’s very nature makes it a kamikaze country”.

NARRATIVE: Russia is saving Ukrainians from the self-destruction caused by Western propaganda

FACT: Ukraine is ravaged by Russia’s war, and the West supports Kyiv’s defensive efforts

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: The Russian government media is trying to suggest Ukrainians’ resistance and patriotism are the effect of Western manipulation. Kyiv politicians are accused of having turned Ukraine into a kamikaze state, which will never resemble the EU. Ukrainians are ready to give their lives for their country because they have reached an extreme form of Nazism, that of self-destruction. For this reason, Russia needs to continue the “de-Nazification” and “turn everyone’s minds towards the Russian World”.

In fact, Ukrainians’ resistance and heroism in the face of the Russian aggression are not a form of Nazism or the effect of Western disinformation. Rather, they are an expression of patriotism and Ukrainians’ willingness to preserve their statehood, culture and identity.

According to a survey conducted by the Razumkov Center based in Kyiv, hatred towards Russia has peaked since the launch of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. Only 5.6% of Ukrainian respondents still believe reconciliation with Russia is possible if Moscow admits its guilt and “repents”. Ukrainians see Russia as an aggressor ruining their sense of normality.

According to another study, Russia’s war has brought Ukrainians closer together and more prone to defend their country. Whereas in 2011, 40% of Ukrainians said they were ready to fight for their country, in June 2023 their numbers reached 67%. Russia’s armed aggression has made Ukrainians more determined to take up arms in order to defend their country, sociologists say.

Therefore, Ukrainians’ fighting spirit is not the result of Western propaganda, as pro-Kremlin media would like readers to think, but rather the fruit of the defensive efforts of the population and the authorities in response to the full-scale invasion.

At the same time, pulling down certain monuments linked to Ukraine’s communist or imperialist past is described by Russian propaganda as an expression of Nazism, which requires a response from Russia. In fact, the actions of Ukrainian authorities are normal in the logic of defensive war efforts. After February 24, 2022, de-communization was achieved as a society-wide reform also by means of a de-Russification policy, which consisted in renaming certain streets, public institutions or taking down certain monuments linked to Ukraine’s Russian past. These actions come in response to the war launched by Russia, a piece of information the article fails to mention. Moreover, the author mocks Ukraine’s Westward-looking stance, saying Ukraine did not join the EU, although its citizens ended up there as refugees. The wave of refugees in the EU is another consequence of Russia’s military actions on the territory of Ukraine. 92% of Ukrainians still want Ukraine to join the EU, despite the 18 months of war whereby Russia tried to force Ukrainian authorities to abandon this objective.

Veridica has disproved a number of false narratives about the nature of the war in Ukraine. According to pro-Kremlin media, Putin warned Ukraine 23 years ago that NATO will start a war, whereas right now the West is forcing Russia to expand its military operations in Ukraine. Russian propaganda has tried to convince the public that cemeteries in Ukraine are filled with the bodies of Ukrainian KIAs, while the mother of mobilized Ukrainians are protesting against the war.
