The future of humanity becomes questionable because of the new restrictive measures that will be implemented in the near future, under which people will have to pay in order to be able to breathe. This unbelievable statement belongs to the lawyer Gheorghe Piperea, known for promoting several false narratives in the public space, and is based on Tarom's decision to print, on the boarding pass, the level of carbon dioxide emissions of the flight, per passenger.
There will be machines that will measure how much each person breathes
NEWS: “The process continues by turning ordinary people into climate criminals. It will be infinitely worse than the pandemic. As with factories, in order to be able to emit more than the authority allows, you will have to pay for certificates. [...] We will pay to breathe, rest assured. This is the trend. Don’t forget that for about 17 years factories and plants have been obliged to buy CO2 certificates annually if they have emitted more gases than the allocated quota. [...] The privileged, however, are being cradled in the purple, always exempted or pardoned for polluting (the likes of Bayer, Pfizer, the GAFAM club). If that was possible against factories, it will also be possible against individuals. If you're wondering how exceeding your allotted limit by breathing over-enthusiastically, excessive belching, or illegal farting, will be determined, don't be. Thermal scanners were used during the pandemic so that we, the laymen unaware of the secrets, would be selected by the great specialists, the security guards at the mall, as “safe” customers.”
NARRATIVE: People will be taxed on the carbon dioxide they breathe out
CONTEXT: The level of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere has been a concern for specialists since the 1950s. The level of CO2 has been measured constantly since 1958. In this way, an average annual increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has been reported, and according to the data published by the Greenhouse Gas Bulletin , in 2021, it reached 149% of the level recorded in the pre-industrial era. The main sources of this increase are emissions from burning fossil fuels and cement production. Therefore, there are concerns that, in the near future, land and ocean ecosystems will no longer have the capacity to effectively absorb the excess of CO2, and act as a buffer against rising temperatures. As a result, the fight against global warming has become extremely important and of maximum interest to an increasing number of people, who are looking to significantly reduce their ecological footprint.
The Covid19 pandemic and Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine have overshadowed another important issue: the fight humanity will have to wage with global warming and its catastrophic climate consequences over the last three years. As Veridica had anticipated a year ago, the topic has found its way back into public attention, and the fighters against the “sanitary dictatorship” are regrouping on the front of climate denialism. In fact, a report published in January by the Climate Action Against Disinformation Coalition and carried out by a team of experts coordinated by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, found that in 2022 there was an explosive increase in climatic denialism on social media.
PURPOSE: To increase the level of indignation towards the authorities, to trigger protests and revolt movements against European and local institutions.
Human breathing does not contribute to climate change
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: As early as 2019, surveys showed that people want to know the exact level of carbon emissions generated when they travel, although formulas for calculating it have existed since 2008. Western railway companies have displayed for years, on the tickets they issue, the level of CO2 emissions. As for flights, since 2021, Google Flights search results show users the amount of carbon emissions of the trips they are interested in, so a buyer can consider the environmental footprint in the same way they do with price and duration. The initiative was implemented by the major airlines already that year, and recently, Tarom has decided to do the same, although, basically, the amount of CO2 emissions of an airplane is very little influenced by the number of passengers. Its individual highlighting on the boarding pass is rather a measure of increasing the degree of awareness among the population of the impact it has on the planetary ecosystem.
Currently, airlines flying within Europe must present permits from the EU carbon market to cover their carbon dioxide emissions. However, most of them (over 80%) are offered by the European community for free. In a bid to put some pressure on the aviation sector to move away from fossil fuels, the European Parliament has decided to gradually reduce the number of free carbon permits by 25% in 2024, by 50% in 2025, until their complete elimination in 2026.
This will mean that airline operators will have to pay for their CO2 permits, thus being incentivized to pollute less, which will most likely lead to an increase in ticket prices. But obviously, this does not imply an individual tax on the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere through breathing.
Moreover, scientists say that human breathing does not contribute to the climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, as the carbon dioxide exhaled enters a natural cycle that includes CO2-absorbing plants. On the other hand, carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels is additional and accumulates in the atmosphere, causing the greenhouse effect.
GRAIN OF TRUTH: A possible source of inspiration for the false narrative about the tax on oxygen could be the fact that for many years there have existed the so-called “oxygen bars”, presented either as a solution to escape, for a while, from excessive pollution ( in cities like New Delhi), or for recreational purposes, or to support the idea that the oxygen therapy has benefits (which, however, belongs to the area of alternative medicine). In those bars, which are private initiatives, customers pay a fee to consume oxygen.
