The Russian media writes about the meeting president Vladimir Putin had with UN Secretary General, António Guterres, describing it as a major win for Moscow at international level. According to false narratives published by Kremlin-linked news agencies, Putin convinced Guterres that the Nazis in Ukraine have committed war crimes and that Russia’s “special military operation” abides by UN principles.

NEWS: Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, provided evidence to the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, during their meeting on April 26, that Nazism in Ukraine poses a threat to mankind, experts have told URA.RU. The Russian president showed the UN leader who the real instigators of the conflict in Ukraine really are, and told him about his decision to launch the special military operation. President Putin presented evidence attesting to the war crimes committed by nationalists. Following this meeting, political experts believe the United Nations will likely call for a trial at the International Criminal Court.

[…]

We were forced to recognize LNR and DNR as independent states, with a view to putting an end to the genocide in Donbas. In the wake of Kyiv’s acts of aggression, the leadership of the two republics requested military aid from Russia. I repeat, the special operation is a necessary measure to stop the suffering of the inhabitants of these territories”, Putin said.

[…]

Putin had evidence collected about the war crimes committed by neo-Nazis in Ukraine. The base of evidence will be used in the sessions of the International Criminal Court. It is related to the massacre of civilians in Donbas, the “Tochka U” missile attacks on the Donetsk city center and the train station in Kramatorsk, the blowing up of the Theatre in Mariupol, where some 200 people had taken shelter, the use of civilians as “human shields”, and others. Moreover, Ukrainian authorities have been constantly spreading fake news about the Russian army: the events in Bucha, the bombing of a maternity hospital in Mariupol and others.

NARRATIVES: 1. Vladimir Putin convinced the UN Secretary General that Ukrainian Nazis should be put on trial at the International Criminal Court. 2. Russia did not commit war crimes on the territory of Ukraine. On the contrary, it saved the Russian-speaking population from the genocide staged by Kyiv.

WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: In fact, the UN Secretary General never said his opinion about the war in Ukraine has changed. On the contrary, Guterres said Russia intervened with its armed forces on the territory of a sovereign state, thus breaching the UN charter. In Moscow, the UN leader said Russia has started a genuine war against Ukraine, claiming to “denazify” and “demilitarize” this country, thus rejecting Putin’s arguments about a “special operation”. Guterres’s statements are a carryover of the official position of the UN General Assembly, which condemned Russia’s acts of aggression in Ukraine.

No commentary or official press release seems to indicate that Putin managed to make the UN Secretary General change his mind about the war in Ukraine. URA.RU writes that the UN will take legal action at the International Criminal Court against “Nazis” in Ukraine, adding at one point that this is the opinion / assumption of Russian experts.

Whereas the body of the article references certain political experts from Russia, who support the Kremlin’s official rhetoric, then the headline “Putin proved to the UN Secretary General that Nazism in Ukraine poses a global threat” doesn’t also specify that this is actually what “some experts in Russia claim”. The article would normally have to published in the “Opinions” section, not under “News from Moscow”. Considering more and more people are reading the headlines rather than the articles themselves, a lot of Russian speakers in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other ex-Soviet republics are left with the impression that the UN Secretary General has “given in” to the arguments and evidence presented by Putin.

The idea of a trial at the International Criminal Court was brought up with the discovery of the war crimes committed by Russian troops in Bucha, Borodyanka, Irpen and other Ukrainian towns and villages. Moscow is blaming Ukrainian “Nazis”, a construct the Kremlin fabricated with the help of propaganda narratives that the international media has repeatedly disproved.

Veridica too debunked a series of false narratives disseminated by the Kremlin, according to which  French gendarmes will cover up the traces of Ukraine’s crimes in Bucha,  while Kyiv is torturing prisoners of war and is refusing to observe the Geneva Convention.

Furthermore, at the end of March, the Russian government media wrote that the UN supports the genocide targeting Russian speakers in Ukraine.

In fact, the Russian army invaded Ukraine, bombed and sieged cities, killing thousands of civilians and inflicting massive damage to civilian infrastructure. Kyiv claims Russia is organizing a genocide against the Ukrainian nation. In an interview to the BBC, president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia’s operations against Ukraine are not a war, but a fully-fledged genocide.
