WAR PROPAGANDA: The UN supports the genocide targeting Russian speakers in Ukraine

The Russian media accuses the UN of having allegedly encouraged the “genocide” organized by Ukrainian “Nazis” against Russian speakers in Ukraine, since the Security Council did not adopt the resolution regarding the ceasefire proposed by Moscow. The UN General Assembly previous adopted a resolution – ignored by Russia – in which it called for a termination of the conflict.

NEWS: “The United Nations Security Council has once again proved to the whole world is uselessness in matters that require an urgent solution in order to save human lives. The humanitarian resolution of the Russian Federation (cosigned by Belarus, North Korea and Syria) which demanded an immediate ceasefire and the evacuation of civilians from Ukraine was blocked. The document did not receive the 9 out of 15 votes required to pass.

Russia and China have supported the resolution. France, the United Kingdom, the USA, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates all abstained. Although none of these countries voted “against”, it is amazing that none of them wants to put an end to the horrible crimes of Ukrainian Nazis against the civilian population.

Kyiv continues to use the civilian population as human shields and, contrary to international law, to amass heavy weapons close to hospitals and kindergartens […]

In Kharkiv, the army shot civilians, scattered, exhausted, starving and thirsty, who wanted to leave the basement of a house. “For their initiative, they were shot by nationalist fanatics in their very courtyard”, Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev, the head of Russia’s National Defense Management Center said.

NARRATIVE: The UN supports the genocide targeting Russian speakers in Ukraine.

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: The UN Security Council rejected the resolution tabled by Russia, considering it didn’t make any reference to Moscow’s role in triggering the humanitarian crisis, which started after the Russian army invaded Ukraine, bombing and sieging cities, killing thousands of civilians and causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure. Russia’s ceasefire proposal is also quite cynical, considering the Russian army is the one that is supposed to stop firing and step back in order to end the war.

Furthermore, 140 UN members voted the resolution “Humanitarian consequences of the aggression against Ukraine”, which accuses the Russian Federation of military aggression. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry thanked the international community for adopting this resolution that calls on Russia to stop firing and to refrain from attacking civilians and non-military infrastructure.

According to Russian propaganda, the United Nations opposes the evacuation of civilians from Ukraine, who don’t want to be killed by Ukrainian “Nazis”. In fact, the UN General Assembly’s resolution specifically demands to create humanitarian corridors allowing for the evacuation of civilians. The signatories of the resolution tabled to the Security Council, Russia, Belarus, China, Syria and Eritrea, voted against the resolution proposed by the General Assembly. Therefore, Russia itself opposed the creation of humanitarian corridors as part of a resolution that refers to the Russian Federation as the perpetrator of an aggression.

Equally false is the information carried by the Russian media about the Ukrainian armed forces attacking civilians. Veridica has recently disproved a false Russian propaganda narrative, according to which Mariupol was destroyed by Ukrainian (nationalist) forces in the city. The narrative is designed to divert attention from the fact that the Russian army bombed the city, without any consideration for the lives of civilians or the damage it might cause. International observers and journalists have documented Russia’s numerous attacks on civilian objectives in Ukraine, including Kharkiv and Mariupol. According to Ukrainian authorities, over 4,500 Ukrainian homes and 400 schooling units have been destroyed by Russia.
