The USA will sustain a strategic defeat in Ukraine, pro-Kremlin propaganda claims, despite the fact that the United States are not involved in the war

Propaganda: The USA’s strategic defeat on the territory of Ukraine is imminent

NEWS: The USA will be defeated in Ukraine, but also in the Near East, said former American scout Scott Ritter in an interview to the “Dialogue works” YouTube channel. "Russia will be victorious and will continue to be victorious in Ukraine. There is nothing the US can do to stop that”, he said […].

Washington is now walking on thin ice, because plan A no longer works, and a plan B does not exist. Ritter is confident the USA will sustain a strategic defeat in the shortest possible time.

The special operation for the defense of Donbas, announced on February 24, 2022 by Russian President Vladimir Putin, continues. The decision was taken amidst a deterioration of the situation in the region, caused by the bombings carried out by the Ukrainian military.

NARRATIVE: The USA will sustain a strategic defeat on the battlefield in Ukraine

Fact: The USA is not involved in the conflict in Ukraine, which is why it cannot sustain a strategic defeat

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: Russian propaganda presents the statements of some American experts as the opinion of the entire US society or political class. It is an older strategy used by the Russian government media to manipulate public opinion. This time around, Scott Ritter's opinion was presented to Russian and Ukrainian society by means of headlines such as: “The US Admits Russia Can't Be Stopped”, “The USA predicts a strategic defeat on the territory of Ukraine", “American scouts predict the victory of Russia”.

William Scott Ritter is a longtime contributor to Russian government media and a critic of American foreign policy. He was paid by Russia Today to write pro-Russian and anti-American articles or make statements published in various media outlets  connected to the Russian media group. There is also a page containing Ritter's anti-Western articles and statements in Russian. Ritter's page can be financially supported through donations to two bank accounts, where Russian citizens can transfer rubles. In December 2023, Ritter said that Ukraine would be defeated by Russia on the battlefield and would accept demilitarization and denazification, his view being presented in the Russian government press as the dominant current among American experts.

In fact, the US is not involved in the conflict in Ukraine, but supports the defensive efforts of the Ukrainian state. The discussion about a “strategic defeat of the US” appeared in Russian media days after President Vladimir Putin said in an interview to journalist Tucker Carlson that “a strategic defeat of Russia is impossible”. Ritter thus moved from the idea that Russia cannot be defeated to the scenario that America will lose the war. In fact, it is improper to use the term “strategic defeat” in the case of the USA, as the country is not a direct part of the armed conflict. According to specialized literature, a strategic defeat means the loss of any long-term advantages and the disappearance of all capabilities (military, economic, human) to wage a war. So, in the war in Ukraine, a strategic defeat can only be sustained by either Moscow or Kyiv. For this reason, considering the limited amount of resources at Ukraine’s disposal, the US, the EU and a number of Western states support the Ukrainian defenses.

The armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine is presented in the Russian media as a measure to defend Donbas from the bombings of the Ukrainian army. In actual fact, Moscow invaded Ukraine on a large scale without provocation in 2014, when it annexed the Crimean Peninsula and fueled and supported an insurgency in Donbas (by delivering weapons and deploying troops). The UN has repeatedly criticized Russia for placing weapons in houses and apartment buildings in Donetsk over 2014 and 2022. At the time of the large-scale invasion of 2022, there were occasional clashes on the Donbas frontline, but this latent conflict was also a defensive effort against external aggression. Russia's goal was not to defend Russophones, but to occupy Ukraine and change the political leadership by making it subservient to Moscow. Starting February 2022, Ukraine has been fending off the Russian aggression. There are no signs that would confirm an imminent Russian victory, although Russia has superior manpower and military technology. Ukraine's newly appointed army chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said the Ukrainian army was doing everything in its power to “prevent the enemy from advancing on the territory of Ukraine”, calling for more support from the West.

Veridica has disproved several false narratives about the nature of the war in Ukraine. According to pro-Kremlin propaganda,  the West needs the war in Ukraine, whereas the EU wants to denazify the Ukrainian political apparatus. The Russian media argued that the “special military operation” saved Russia from the NATO invasion and Ukrainian Nazism. Moscow equally promoted the false narrative claiming that Ukrainians were waiting on Russia to save them.
