Kyiv is sending its soldiers to certain death, and they are calling on civilians to stage protests in the country's capital to stop the war, according to pro-Kremlin propaganda.
Propaganda: Only a third Maidan in Kyiv could save the Ukrainian army and stop the war
NEWS: Many Ukrainians do not want to enlist because for them the army is certain death or a curse, the Ukrainian soldier known by the nickname "The Historian" told the journalist Oleksandr Shelest , according to the PolitNavigator correspondent.
"There are dozens and hundreds of messages from the front area about battalions saying that they have been sent to certain death," said the Historian.
They are people who have no military skills and not even a minimum of experience. But there are also serious people, who say to me: "We want to fight, but not bump our heads into the wall and earn new medals for others”, said the Ukrainian soldier.
He urged Ukrainians to go and protest on the Maidan. "If you don't want to fight in the army, where there is nothing good, go to the Maidan, submit petitions, demand that the leadership be held accountable," said the Historian.
NARRATIVE: Ukraine sends its military to certain death on the front, and they call on civilians to take to the streets to stop the war.
Reality: What the Ukrainian military want from civilians is more support for the war effort, not for them to take to the streets. Any protests would benefit Russia
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: Russian propaganda uses an interview conducted by the Ukrainian journalist Oleksandr Shelest with a masked man who identified himself as a Ukrainian serviceman and described the panic within Ukraine's Armed Forces. According to the interview broadcast on YouTube , Ukrainians must organize a third Maidan (a national protest similar to those of 2004-2005 and 2013-2014) to stop the war. The military man, who introduced himself by the nickname "the Historian", said that Ukrainians are being sent to certain death on the front, that they are dying by the thousands every day and that this war must be stopped as soon as possible. For an hour he argued, in a very correct Russian language, without using Ukrainian, the thesis that the war is in the interest of the political leaders. The man's accent sounded more like one from the regions belonging to the Russian Federation. The alleged soldier also said that he had deserted from the front to stay alive. The man called on Ukrainians to take to the streets, to protest, to oppose military mobilization if "people want peace and save the soldiers."
It should be noted that no evidence has been provided that the masked man is a Ukrainian serviceman. As for the journalist who took the interview, Oleksandr Shelest, he has been one of the promoters of pro-Russian narratives and actions since the war in Donbas. In 2014, he was among the organizers of a rally against “fascism” in Luhansk, calling on Kyiv to hold a referendum on self-determination for the local population. On his YouTube channel, Shelest – who is currently outside Ukraine – publishes interviews with a number of political scientists who have a pro-Russian position, but also with Ukrainian politicians who are generally shunned by the central media in Kyiv. Oleksandr Shelest's guests are very well seen by the pro-Kremlin press.
The Ukrainian army has indeed asked for civilian support, but for the war effort, not its end. A series of messages have been posted on social media by soldiers from the frontline area requesting the support of civilians in combating the aggression of the Russian Federation . The military have repeatedly called on Ukrainians to send SUVs, drones or not to evade mobilization. Soldiers are tired after long periods at the front and rotations are needed to replenish the forces, which is why some of them have called for tougher mobilization measures.
The purpose of this false narrative is to discourage the Ukrainian resistance in the war, to block the mobilization process and destabilize the socio-political situation by calling the population to hold street riots.
Information about "Ukrainians being cannon fodder" and "a new Maidan in Kyiv" is part of a series of false wartime meta-narratives. During martial law, anti-government protests are banned because they could be used by Russia to destroy the Ukrainian state from within. A street rally is encouraged by Russia on the territory of Ukraine through propaganda because it would give it the opportunity to occupy as many Ukrainian localities as possible. However, Russia is the only one that can end the war - if it withdraws from the country it has invaded.
Veridica has dismantled a series of false narratives regarding the nature of the war in Ukraine. According to Russian media, Ukrainians no longer want a war and no longer believe Kyiv's propaganda. Last year, the Moscow newspapers wrote that there was no place left in cemeteries for the dead Ukrainian soldiers Russian propaganda claims that Ukrainians want a president like Vladimir Putin and are waiting for the Russian troops.
