US Vice President JD Vance urged Romanians to revolt in order to free themselves from the French colonial rule, claims MEP Diana Șoșoacă.

NEWS: "VIVE LA REVOLUTION!" THE AMERICANS HAVE GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT! ONLY A REVOLUTION CAN SAVE WHAT ONCE WAS ROMANIA!

WHAT HAVE I BEEN TELLING YOU ALL THIS TIME? ON OCTOBER 5, 2024, THE ROMANIAN STATE WAS ABOLISHED! I TOLD YOU THAT WE NEED TO REBUILD THE STATE OF ROMANIA! THAT IS WHY CERTAIN YOUNG PEOPLE ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO INSULT ROMANIA! WAKE UP!

THAT'S WHY THEY CENSOR ME! SO I CAN'T TELL YOU ANYTHING! AND SO WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING! COME ON, GUYS! LEAVE THE SALONS! GRAB YOUR COATS AND BOOTS! THIS POST IS A PAMPHLET AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH! COME ON, GET LOST, YOU JUDASES!

NARRATIVE: JD Vance tells Romanians to free themselves from the French rule through a revolution.

PURPOSES: To promote a sovereigntist and anti-Western discourse, to undermine trust in state authorities, to provoke and amplify  social tensions, to validate their own conspiracy theories.

A blatant fake, part of a network of cloned websites

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: US Vice President JD Vance has not said or suggested in any statement that Romania is a "French colony," and recent searches and checks have not identified any public statement to that effect by the US official.

The photograph accompanying Diana Șoșoacă's post is just a blatant fake, with multiple spelling mistakes, poorly imitating the Europa Liberă website: "Senator J.D. Vance: We cannot get involved in the Romanian state. Romania was a democratic country! It is no longer! Only the people can do justice, no one else! You are a French colony! We are not involved in saving Romania, only the people can do that. It is their only and last chance." JD. Vance." The fake is easily identifiable from the very first word of the image, which refers to Vance as a senator and not as the vice president of the United States.

Most likely, the false information refers to Vance's speech in February 2025 at the Munich Security Conference, in which he did indeed criticize the cancellation of the first round of the Romanian presidential electios of Novermber 2024, saying that it was based on "flimsy suspicions" by intelligence services and enormous pressure from the "continental neighbors," an indirect reference to the European Union as a whole, not to a specific country. In this context, he said that if a democracy can be undermined by a few hundred thousand dollars of digital advertising from a foreign country (an allusion to Russia), then that democracy was not very strong to begin with.

However, neither then nor in any subsequent speech did the US Vice President mention France's possible role as a colonizer, either in Romania or in any other country, nor did he suggest that Paris exercised any colonial influence in any state.

The Doppelganger network, reactivated

CONTEXT: In May, in the midst of the presidential election campaign, ANCOM warned about the presence of a  network of Doppelganger websites on the local online space. These sites closely imitate the official websites of public institutions, television stations, and major news agencies, promoting misleading content on social, political, economic, or health issues in order to mislead the population and negatively influence their perceptions. Two weeks after ANCOM's warning and the blocking of the network, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the use of cloned pages to influence the electoral process had resumed.  The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated at the time that those pages were linked to several advertising companies using native ads technology, with "direct links to the Russian Federation."

Russian propaganda attacks on France have multiplied recently in the media, and this is linked to the fact that Moscow perceives France as its "main adversary in Europe," according to statements by Vladimir Putin himself. This explains why, in Romania, France has suddenly become the "colonizer" that imposes its "imperialist" policies on Bucharest. This has led to the emergence of several pieces of misinformation and fake news in the public sphere, such as the claim that France legalized pedofilia , that  French mercenaries had infiltrated the Romanian Gendarmerie   to make reprisals against supporters of the former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu more effective, or the narrative that France is the "mastermind" that wants the war in Ukraine to continue   and is calling for European troops to be sent to the front. Things went even further when, during the presidential election campaign, the AUR leader George Simion accused President Emmanuel Macron of "dictatorial tendencies" on a French television station. In fact, through this arsenal of fake news and disinformation, the propaganda aims to destabilize the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance, with France being the country in command of NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Romania.

Declared the political personality of the year 2021 by the Kremlin's mouthpiece, Sputnik, Diana Șoșoacă has made a name for herself over time through various scandals  in which she has been involved, but also through the promotion of theses, false narratives, and disinformation very similar to those launched from Russia. In her speeches  she also promotes sovereigntist, anti-European, and anti-Ukrainian ideas, while her political activity boils down to taking discriminatory, homophobic, and anti-Semitic positions, legislative initiatives that blatantly contravene international law, and questions that border on the ridiculous. A separate chapter in Diana Şoşoacă's discourse is, of course, the conspiracy theories related to the healthcare system and the hidden plans to exterminate the global population through vaccines, medicines, medical procedures, and treatments for various diseases. Lately, she seems to have made a habit of promoting the most blatant fake news stories appearing on social media, without the slightest verification, discernment, or common sense.
