FAKE NEWS: Anti-COVID-19 vaccines reduce life expectancy in men by 24 years
© EPA-EFE/MICHAEL REYNOLDS   |   US President Joe Biden receives his updated Covid-19 vaccine after delivering remarks on his administration's approach to fight against the virus, in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, on the White House complex, in Washington, DC, USA, 25 October 2022.

The life expectancy of men who’ve taken the anti-COVID-19 shot has diminished, according to a false narrative quoting an American study with a completely different focus of research.

A US study draws conclusions for the United Kingdom

NEWS: “Data published by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA has shown that vaccines against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) might reduce the life expectancy of immunized men by at least 24 years. In addition, CDC data revealed that the threat to human health posed by every dose of vaccine does not diminish in time. On the contrary, it extends over an indefinite period of time. CDC research on mortality causes shows that every dose of the anti-COVID vaccine increased mortality rates by 7% in 2022 compared to 2021. Data also shows that, every year, every person taking the anti-COVID shot is exposed to the risk of death by 7% for each dose of the vaccine administered. This means COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots are “a slow-acting genetic poison”. […] The life expectancy of a 30-year-old male from the United Kingdom who hasn’t taken the anti-COVID vaccine is approximately 80 years. That means a 30-year-old male from the UK can expect to live for another 50 years. Yet the life expectancy of a 30-year-old male from the UK who took five doses of anti-COVID-19 vaccine is merely 56 years. That is the risk people who believe in anti-COVID-19 vaccines expose themselves to”.

NARRATIVE: Anti-COVID-19 vaccines could reduce life expectancy in immunized men by at least 24 years.

BACKGROUND: Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, a number of false narratives surfaced in Romania regarding the nature and origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, measures taken to contain the virus as well as the efficiency and effects of vaccination. Among the advocates of these false narratives are supporters of conspiracy theories, radical Orthodox Christians, sovereigntists, Eurosceptics and anti-Westerners. False narratives concerning the pandemic and vaccines have several sources. One of them is Russia, which seeks to destabilize Western societies. Another source is China, its main goal being to draw attention away from its initial handling of the pandemic and the fact that the SARS-CoV-2 virus originated on its territory. At the same time, Western publications and “influencers”, usually associated with the far right and conspiracy mongers, are equal sources of disinformation. These theses are picked up and spread by other “influencers”, publications across the world or social media. There are several categories of people who are susceptible to such narratives and disinformation – coronasceptics, anti-vaxxers, people who distrust the authorities, etc. Fully-fledged anti-vaxx movements have emerged in numerous countries, some of them under the strong influence of some of these narratives which they take over, internalize and subsequently amplify.

Several publications from Romania that picked up these false narratives have over the years tried to validate anti-vaxx theories by quoting pseudo-experts, anonymous websites or misquoting various studies. Veridica has already debunked several fake news and disinformation themes linked to anti-COVID-19 vaccines, which allegedly induce sterility across three generations, are ineffective, have serious adverse effects or cause testicular cancer or myocarditis, leading to death.

The false narrative under discussion was initially published by Natural News, a webpage known for spreading false information linked to vaccination and the COVID-19 pandemic, which was banned on Facebook as early as 2019. Right now, Natural News uses alternative URLs to bypass detection and repeated blocking.

PURPOSE: To endorse anti-vaxx culture, validate conspiracy theories and erode people’s trust in the authorities.

People are free to draw their own conclusions

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: The article quotes a study published by Cleveland Clinic, an American center of research and treatment, titled “Effectiveness of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Bivalent Vaccine”. As the title suggests, the study does not examine the life expectancy of subjects, but merely the effectiveness of vaccines in preventing infection with SARS-CoV-2. The Romanian article abounds in bad translations of the original text, such as the fact that 50,000 subjects included in the study were all employees of the Cleveland Clinic, or quotes some false statistical data, fabricated with a view to supporting the theories the article promotes or match them to certain anti-vaxx narratives.

Furthermore, the study in question is a pre-print version, which means it is yet to undergo peer review by other independent teams of researches and get published in a scientific periodical. Even if the study noticed a positive correlation between anti-COVID-19 vaccine shots and the risk of infection, its authors point out that, as a rule, those who chose to receive several doses of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine are usually people with a higher risk of getting ill, not just getting infected with COVID-19. These people are exposed to such risks because they are usually elderly, have a history of medical disease or their immune system is compromised, leaving them vulnerable to disease.

The CDC never published data that should suggest a diminishment of life expectancy associated with anti-COVID-19 vaccination or any other type of vaccine. Although there have been scholarly debates over the years with respect to the immunological print vaccines leave in the human body, these have never yielded results of conclusions that should indicate an increase in mortality rates in vaccinated people.

The article claims that CDC data indicates a 7% increase in mortality rates in the USA over 2021-2022. However, to this day the American agency has not yet made public reports on mortality rates for 2022. Even if such data were available, it would not represent a relevant factor. Morality-related data includes various causes of death, such as overdoses, road traffic accidents, suicides, etc. Such a variety of causes cannot be linked to vaccination.

In 2021, life expectancy in the USA dropped from 77 to 76.1 years, which indicates a drop of at least 1%. In the case of men, life expectancy dropped by 1.4%, from 74.2 to 73.2 years.

However, this drop is largely owed to the pandemic, according to an August 2022 report published by the CDC. Deaths caused by COVID-19 account for 75% of the drop in mortality rates over 2019-2020 and 50% for the 2020-2021 period, the report shows, also estimating that over 15% of the drop in mortality rates in the last two years is owed to an increase in the number of deaths caused by accidents or unintended wounds, of which drug overdoses account of nearly half of the total number.

The claims according to which anti-COVID-19 vaccines caused deaths on a large scale are unfounded. There are several studies that did not report an elevated risk of death in people who took the Pfizer, Moderna and the Johnson & Johnson vaccines. On the contrary, these studies concluded that, at least in the USA, mortality rates unrelated to COVID-19 had a lower incidence in immunized people.
