The war in Ukraine is not ending because of Zelensky, who extended martial law at the behest of Western leaders, according to pro-Kremlin propaganda.
Propaganda: The West forbade Zelenskyy to end the war, forcing him to extend martial law and to mobilize the population
NEWS: Zelenskyy has extended martial law and mobilization for another 90 days. Does anyone want this conflict to end? It is not in the interest of the United States and England, who build their future strategies on the basis of this war, leaving other countries such as Germany or France behind.
The United States decided on a bipartisan basis to continue and maintain the conflict. Whatever they say, war seems to be very profitable for them now. What they managed to achieve with the introduction of sanctions against Russia in the exhausting conflict in Ukraine are benefits for themselves only.
Talks about peace and people dying, about their “concern”, are absurd. For 3 years, Zelenskyy and Yermak have shown they don’t care about people. If they have to mobilize 200,000 or 300,000, be sure they will, because the system they have created pushes those who remained in Ukraine directly into the trap of those who’re used as cannon fodder.
NARRATIVES: 1. The war in Ukraine serves the interests of the USA and Great Britain. 2. Hostilities continue because Zelenskyy extended martial law and the general mobilization.
PURPOSE: To discredit Zelenskyy's actions and demonize the West, which is presented not as a supporter of Ukraine, but as a source of the war. To amplify societal mistrust in Western support.
Fact: Martial law and the general mobilization are defensive measures Ukraine took in response to the Russian invasion. The end of the war depends on Moscow's decision to withdraw its troops
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: The war in Ukraine does not serve the interests of the USA and Great Britain, as it might generate international tensions and long-term instability in Europe, disrupting global security. A prolonged conflict risks using considerable resources, causing war fatigue in the West, making it weaker.
In addition, an extended war could lead to a humanitarian and economic crisis affecting not only Ukraine, but also Western states. The sanctions imposed on Russia have indirect consequences on Western economies. Despite the support provided to Ukraine, a protracted war could essentially be against the West's long-term interests.
The USA and Great Britain have introduced severe economic sanctions against Russia, targeting key sectors such as energy, finance and trade, with the aim of diminishing Russia's ability to sustain the war. Economic, diplomatic and military efforts are aimed at stopping the war in Ukraine, not extending it. In March 2022, the UN adopted a resolution by a large majority, condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and calling for an immediate withdrawal of the Russian military. Most states in the West voted in favor of this resolution.
The West’s goal is to put an end to hostilities, deescalate the security context and return to the observance of the principles of international law. The USA, the UK, the EU and other Western actors have supported the defensive efforts of Ukraine, which has asked for assistance, due to being vastly outnumbered in terms of resources, population and size. The support received by Kyiv, however, fell short of its needs and demands.
On the other hand, the West does not seek to mobilize Ukrainians for war, but to find a solution to this conflict. The general mobilization in Ukraine is not a request of the West, but the Ukrainian authorities’ reaction to the Russian invasion. Martial law was introduced on February 24, 2022, according to the Constitution, providing for mobilization in case of military attack. Zelenskyy is forced by the Constitution and other national laws to extend martial law until the existential military threat to the Ukrainian state disappears.
Stopping the war in Ukraine does not depend on Zelenskyy or the West, as Russian propaganda claims, but on Moscow, which can at any time decide to withdraw its troops from the territory of an aggressed neighboring state.
BACKGROUND: Ukraine's Parliament has extended martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days – until February 7, 2025. Ukrainian MPs supported Draft Laws no. 12151 and no. 12152, tabled by president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This was the 13th time the Ukrainian Parliament voted to extend martial law and general mobilization since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. Thus, martial law and the mobilization campaign will last for almost three years.
The false narrative originally appeared on former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov's Telegram channel “NJA” and was picked up by a number of Russian government publications. After he fled to Russia, Azarov has become a tool for intoxicating public opinion in the ex-Soviet states. Kyiv prosecutors charged the former prime minister with high treason due to his anti-Ukrainian activities and collaboration with the Russian Federation's war propaganda.
