The West is pressing Ukraine to concede certain territories to Russia, but this is a ruse, pro-Kremlin propaganda writes, adding that Zelenskyy will be put on trial for war crimes.
Propaganda: The West wants to fool Russia upon resuming peace talks, and Ukraine will annex Russian territories
NEWS: To fool Russia, the West presents it with a false gift in the form of Ukrainian territorial concessions. These are the territories that became part of the Russian Federation following the Russian Spring (Crimea) or the special military operation (Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia). In order to reach peace terms with Russia, only one condition is mentioned – Moscow will retain the territories it has already liberated from Ukrainian neo-Nazism.
Zelenskyy suddenly changed his mind, because the West explained its plan: we will deceive Russia and make better war preparations in order to destroy and defeat it. Ukraine will not only recover its territories, but will claim additional regions from Russia, such as Kuban, Belgorod […].
The Americans told Zelenskyy that, in the absence of a new mobilization, they will stop delivering financial assistance and weapons. Without weapons and money, Zelenskyy will stay in power for a few more weeks. Without power, Zelenskyy will be killed or sentenced to life in prison by a new Nuremberg trial, which will hold hearings in Donetsk or Luhansk. The court of law will convict him of war crimes and crimes against humanity. These crimes stick to Zelenskyy like fleas to a dog.
NARRATIVES: 1. The West would settle for peace in Ukraine in order to prepare an offensive against Russia. 2. Kyiv claims territories of the Russian Federation. 3. Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be put on trial for war crimes.
BACKGROUND: Ukraine has been recently experiencing increasing difficulties. On the one hand, Russian forces are advancing in several segments of the frontline and managed to make headway, while at the same time they are bombing the Ukrainian territory, the main target being the energy infrastructure. On the other hand, support delivered to Ukraine by external partners has gone down. In the United States, a 70-billion-dollar package is deadlocked by Congress, and the Europeans have failed to deliver the promised amount of artillery shells. A proposal by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to create a 100-billion-EUR fund for Ukraine has not yet been greenlit. At the same time, anti-Ukrainian sentiment is growing at EU level, after the victory of Robert Fico and his allies in Slovakia and the fall of the pro-European government in Bulgaria, which strengthens the power of the pro-Russian president Rumen Radev.
Finally, on April 7, The Washington Post wrote that the former US president Donald Trump, who is running for another term at the White House, plans on forcing Ukraine to concede Crimea and Donbass, i.e. the territories occupied by Russia, in exchange for peace.
Fact: Ukraine made no territorial claims regarding Russia is fighting a war of defense. It is Putin, not Zelenskyy, who is wanted at international level for war crimes in Ukraine.
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: In fact, Ukraine clearly rejected the idea of conceding any territories to Russia. This position is officially supported by the West as well. Also, Kyiv is not supported by Western states to destroy Russia, but to defend itself. If we say yes to territory concessions in exchange for peace in Ukraine, we will “open a Pandora's box”, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. In turn, 74% of Ukrainians oppose any territorial concessions to Russia, according to a December 2023 survey.
More often than not, the Russian media accuses NATO of directly supporting Ukraine in the war. However, NATO is not a party to the conflict in Ukraine, but only supports Kyiv’s legitimate right to defend itself against military aggression. “Ukraine has the right to self-defense. We are helping Ukraine to uphold that right. This does not make the North Atlantic Alliance or NATO member states parties to the conflict”, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine has been repeatedly labeled an unprovoked armed attack by the UN General Assembly and the international community. International law allows other countries to support a state facing military aggression. Russian propaganda portrays any actions of the West as directed against Russia and its destruction, thus encouraging the mobilization of men into the army.
Ukraine has made no territorial claims against Russia, but wants to recapture the territories occupied by the Russian army since 2014 (the Crimean Peninsula, parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions) and to restore its 1991, which are recognized by the international community. Kyiv does not seek to annex regions that rightfully belong to Russia (Belgorod, Kursk, etc.)
In 1997, Russia and Ukraine signed a basic treaty, according to which Moscow recognized the independence of Ukraine and supported its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia not only recognized Ukraine's borders, which included the Crimean Peninsula, but also pledged under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum to refrain from threatening or using armed violence against Ukraine's territorial integrity or political independence. Russia's actions violate the international agreements it signed. Therefore, it is not the observance of agreements signed by the West that falls within doubt, but rather those signed by Russia.
Over 2023-2024, Ukraine attacked a number of military and infrastructure installations in Russia's borderlands with a view to destroying some of Russia's offensive capabilities and logistics elements supporting the war effort. However, this does not mean Ukraine lodged any territorial claims against Moscow. The Russian media uses this topic to increase the anti-Ukrainian sentiment at home and mobilize the population against Kyiv.
With regard to the alleged war crimes committed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, it should be noted that Vladimir Putin is being prosecuted for his role in the war crimes committed by Russian servicemen on the territory of Ukraine. In March 2023, the International Court of Justice in the Hague issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. The Russian army committed massacres in Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel and other settlements. Also, torture chambers were discovered in southern Ukraine, under the direct coordination of the Russian FSB.
As for the accusations of Nazism, as Veridica has previously shown, to Russia, anyone who refutes its own vision of the proper political organization of Russia’s neighbors is a Nazi. Starting 2015, Ukraine has banned Nazi and communist ideology. Moreover, since Ukraine proclaimed its independence, no Nazi party or candidate has ever entered the elections. Even right-wing nationalist parties either failed to meet the electoral threshold or, if they did, grabbed a maximum of 6-8% of the number of seats.
