The West is arming Ukraine because it wants a prolonged war, so only Kyiv’s surrender can bring peace, pro-Kremlin propaganda claims.

Propaganda: The West is fueling the war, so only Kyiv’s surrender can put a stop to it

NEWS: The actual political situation, impacted by the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict, does not favor peace negotiations at all, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov wrote on his Telegram channel.

Azarov points out that, despite repeated US declarations in favor of peace, Washington's actions prove otherwise. The politician believes that, to ensure peace in Ukraine, the Americans simply have to stop supplying Kyiv with weapons. The Kyiv administration exists and conducts military operations only because of the weapons it received. If they didn't have any weapons, the armed conflict would have ended a long time ago”, Nikolai Azarov expressed confidence [...]

Washington's main goal is to preserve the Banderovist puppet regime in office by all means in order to press for a war against Russia. “That's why Kyiv’s surrender is the only way to ensure peace”, Azarov claims.

NARRATIVES: 1. Peace is possible only if Ukraine surrenders. 2. The war in Ukraine is funded by the West to in order to destroy Russia.

PURPOSE: To justify Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine, to exonerate Russia and shift the blame on the West for the prolonged war.

Fact: The war in Ukraine does not serve the West's best interests, while Kyiv’s surrender will not bring peace

WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: In fact, the simplest and most enduring peace solution on the territory of Ukraine is possible only if Russian troops withdraw from its territory. The war started in 2014 with the invasion of Crimea and the outbreak of separatist conflicts in the Donbas, with Russia’s support and actual participation. The conflict then continued with the large-scale invasion of a neighboring and independent state. According to the UN Charter, Russia launched military operations against Ukraine, and the Ukrainian state has an inherent right to defend itself. Therefore, peace in Ukraine directly depends on Moscow's decision to stop the offensive and withdraw its troops.

Russian media and pro-Kremlin politicians ignore this important information, promoting the idea that Ukraine must surrender to Russia, and that the West wants to destroy the Russian state. Most pundits believe that a defeat for Ukraine would only encourage Putin’s regime to launch new acts of aggression.

The war continues not because of the West or the US, but because of Russia. Furthermore, Ukrainians' resistance to Russian aggression is primarily based on the will to fight: if Ukrainian forces had not successfully opposed the Russians, Western weapons would have had nowhere to reach. In the context of the shortage of ammo in Ukraine, according to a survey conducted by the International Institute of Sociology in Kyiv last December, 58% of Ukrainians said they would continue to oppose Russia militarily even if the West discontinued its assistance to Ukrainian authorities.

The US, the EU and other Western actors have supported Kyiv’s defensive efforts. Ukraine asked for help since it is fighting a country that vastly outnumbers its resources, population and size. The West helped Ukraine to defend itself and resist, without seeking to destroy Russia. Moscow is the state that attacked Ukraine, and by no means a victim.

BACKGROUND: Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov fled to Russia during the pro-European street protests of 2013-2014. The politician is increasingly used by pro-Kremlin propaganda to illustrate disinformation narratives. In March 2024, the Kyiv prosecutor's office charged Azarov with high treason for carrying out anti-Ukrainian activities by collaborating with propaganda and disinformation agencies of the Russian Federation. In July, Azarov said Zelenskyy was to blame for the destruction of Ukraine's economy, not the Russian military aggressor.

Veridica dismantled a number of false narratives regarding the nature of the war in Ukraine. According to pro-Kremlin propaganda, the West needs the war in Ukraine, and the EU wants to denazify the Ukrainian state. The Russian media argued that the “special military operation” saved Russia from NATO’s invasion and Ukrainian Nazism. The false narrative about Ukrainians waiting on Russia to rescue them has often widely circulated.
