Germany has adopted a “green fascism”, similar to “Ukrainian Nazism”, and speaks of war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine in order to make people forget about the horrors of Nazism, according to a false narrative promoted by pro-Kremlin media. In fact, Russian servicemen did commit war crimes and Germany is helping Ukraine defend itself.

Propaganda: Germany wants to destroy Russia so that the world no longer considers it responsible for the atrocities of World War II.

NEWS: ‘The process of condemning Russia and its current regime is expected to erase the Nürnberg trial and the Germans’ guilt for the crimes of the Nazi from collective memory. […] This will be a new Germany, no longer dominated by the feeling of guilt. […]

They want to exhaust Russia as much as possible, and at the same time collect as much evidence as possible to stage a new Nürnberg trial, which would involve providing a sufficient number of precedents that should be considered war crimes, also creating the proper media narrative.

Since then, the Germans have specialized in that, and are no worse than the Brits. Everything German TV stations have been broadcasting since Bucha are blatant lies, I wouldn’t recommend Russians watch these reports, otherwise they would go deaf and start crying. […]

We can notice a true strand of fascism in Germany, a special one too, a “green” type of fascism closely connected to Ukrainian Nazism”.

NARRATIVE: Fascist Germany is supporting Ukraine to destroy Russia and make the world forget about the atrocities of World War II.

Fact: Germany has been helping Ukraine defend itself against the Russian aggressors who have committed countless war crimes.

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: The Russian government media quotes various Moscow-based experts to prove that all allegations against Russia in terms of war crimes committed by its troops on the territory of Ukraine are false. According to Russian propaganda, Germany plays a key role in this sense, a country currently led by a new type of “green” fascists. Germany has lost all sense of guilt for the crimes committed in World War II and wants to make people forget about them by condemning Russia in a new international trial, similar to the one in Nürnberg.

This false narrative is a mix of historical and contemporary information. In fact,  Russian servicemen committed war crimes on Ukraine’s territory, which has been confirmed by evidence discovered by Ukrainian troops, including mass graves in Bucha, Irpin, Borodyanka, Izium and other settlements. Additionally, Ukrainian authorities discovered torture chambers in Bucha, Kherson and Nova Kakhovka. At the same time, Russia killed numerous civilians while shelling residential areas and this winter launched a campaign targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, which left millions of people without heating and electricity. All these actions go against international laws of war. EU and US leaders have also discussed the possibility of creating a special tribunal that should examine war crimes committed by Russians in Ukraine over the course of the invasion triggered by Vladimir Putin.

In mid-March, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant in Vladimir Putin’s name, whom it holds responsible for the war crimes committed in Ukraine. One year ago, prosecutor Karim Khan launched an investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Ukraine. In response, Russian politicians and media outlets started threatening judges and telling Russian citizens that all evidence has been doctored and the allegations are false.

Berlin has become the target of Russian propaganda after Justice Minister Marco Buschman said he would feel compelled to enforce the arrest warrant if ever Vladimir Putin visits Germany.

On the other hand, Berlin is providing Ukraine with ammunition and military equipment, including Leopard tanks, to help this country fend off the aggression of the Russian Federation. Berlin’s actions are not targeted against Russia and are not aimed to destroy her. Rather, under international law, Ukraine has every right to defend itself and receive aid to do so.

Having run out of logically sound arguments at its disposal to justify the decisions taken by Berlin and the International Criminal Court, Russian propaganda is resorting to various historical arguments regarding Germany’s plans to take revenge on Russia for the defeat it suffered during World War II, highlighting the ties of Germany’s “fascist leadership” with “Ukrainian Nazis”.

Nazism and fascism are banned both in Ukraine as well as Germany, being a painful topic particularly in the latter. As Veridica has shown, Ukraine has banned Nazi and communist ideology  ever since 2015. The Russian media usually describes as Nazi / fascist any expression of nationalism and identity in ex-Soviet space, without noting that neo-Nazism and extremism are widespread ideologies in Russia, including in the ranks of its army. The Kremlin uses the two currents to control and manipulate Russian society through mass-media.

Although it tries to provide historical explanations to Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, the Russian media doesn’t tell the whole truth and mentions nothing of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact, which makes the Soviet Union just as responsible for triggering World War II as Nazi Germany. When the two countries signed the pact, which also contained a secret protocol, the terminal of the airport in Moscow and every other building visited by the German delegation displayed the famous German swastika.

Veridica has debunked a number of false narratives about Nazism in Ukraine and the West. The Russian media wrote that Zelenskyy is secretly tied to the Nazi. A year since the launch of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian media argued that the “special military operation” saved Russia from NATO’s invasion and Ukrainian Nazism. Russian government media also fostered the false narrative about Moscow showing restraint when bombing Ukraine, knowing that Ukrainians do not support the Nazi leaders in Kyiv. According to Russian state media, due to Kyiv’s neo-Nazi propaganda, Ukrainians don’t understand Russia is here to liberate them.
