mRNA vaccines have caused an increase in cases of physical disability among American working women, according to a new conspiracy theory.
American employees, the healthiest among the Thracians
NEWS: “According to data recently released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than a million women of working age have developed disabilities since the introduction of mRNA vaccines, The Defender reports. Historically, employed Americans have been among the healthiest groups in the population. Since 2020, following the launch of the Covid vaccine, a large number of people in the working population have developed disabilities. As of February 2021, both men and women (aged 16 to 64) have reported disability at an increasing rate. Women have been the most affected. From February 2021 to November 2023, the number of women of working age who reported a disability increased by an unprecedented 55% – from 2.1 million women to 3.2 million women. [...] The increases first began in February 2021. At that time, 5,961 Americans age 16 and older reported having a disability. By August 2021, this number had increased by 42% to 8,477 people reporting a disability. That year, the self-reported disability rate only fell in November, but just by 1%. As of November 2021, the number of people reporting disabilities has continued to grow at unprecedented rates.”
NARRATIVE: mRNA vaccines cause physical disabilities in able-bodied women.
CONTEXT: False narratives regarding the effectiveness and effects of vaccination had been circulating in Romania for many years, but they became much more visible with the advent of anti-Covid vaccines. Among the promoters of these false narratives are followers of conspiracy theories, radical Orthodox, sovereignists, Euro-skeptics and anti-Western. False narratives regarding the pandemic and vaccines have many sources. One of them is Russia, which aims to destabilize Western societies. At the same time, however, there are a lot of Western publications and "influencers", usually from the area of the radical right and conspiracists, who are also sources of disinformation. These are taken over and spread by other "influencers" or local publications, to an audience sensitive to such narratives and disinformation - corona skeptics, anti-vaxxers, people who do not trust the authorities, etc. Real anti-vaccine movements have emerged in numerous countries, heavily influenced by some of these narratives, which they take up, internalize, and amplify.
In Romania, several publications, including Activenews, have taken over such false narratives and sought, over time, to validate their anti-vaccine theories through pseudo-experts, anonymous websites or by falsely citing various studies. Veridica has already debunked several fake news and disinformation regarding the anti-Covid19 vaccine, which allegedly cause sterility for three generations, reduce life expectancy in men by 24 years , or cause testicular cancer or myocarditis to those immunized, thus leading to their death.
The false narrative in question was originally published on The Defender, the website of the US NGO Children's Health Defense (CHD), run by Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., one of the children of former US Attorney General Robert Kennedy, brother of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. RFK Jr. became known as an environmental advocate, but also for his promotion of conspiracy theories and his opposition to vaccines. The NGO he founded and leads, CsHD, is described by the international media as one of the main sources of disinformation about vaccines and health policies worldwide, and for this reason, several social media have removed the association’s accounts from their platforms. Its budget is financed by donations from individuals, but mostly by "anonymous" donations from other foundations.
PURPOSE: To undermine the population's trust in the authorities, to promote the anti-vaxxer discourse, to validate one's own conspiracy theories, to provoke and amplify social tension.
A translated fake news is still fake news
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: The data published by "The Defender" are taken from the reports of the United States Department of Labor, but the connection between the number of people with physical disabilities employed and mRNA vaccines is forced on the basis of clearly biased reasoning, devoid of any logic.
Those reports do not contain data regarding the vaccination status of the population or the type of vaccine used in the case of those inoculated. The reports show that, indeed, the number of American women with disabilities in the workforce increased from 2,119,000 to 3,291,000 during the time period indicated, but the same phenomenon occurred with regard to employed men with disabilities, whose number increased more than in the case of women, from 2,166,000 to 3,358,000.
On the other hand, the reports were drawn up taking into account all categories of disabilities, not only physical, but also mental.
In fact, the increase in the number of people with disabilities - both physical and mental - who are working is due to advances in medicine and, above all, legislation that prohibits discrimination in the workplace against people with disabilities. Also, the American authorities are looking at the constant increase in the number of people with disabilities integrated into a gainful activity, and benefiting from their own income, in order to decongest the health budgets, given that in some states more than a third are used for expenses in the form of aid for such persons. Every month, the US authorities receive tens of millions of requests for screening for potential disabilities, largely due to/because of the benefits they can obtain.
