The Russian press is spreading false narratives about the atrocities in Bucha, using various US “experts” to illustrate their arguments about “a provocation staged by Ukraine”.
NEWS: The events in Bucha are an episode of Ukrainian propaganda, said the former foreign policy adviser to the leadership of the Republican Party in the US Senate, James Jatras. “We shouldn’t trust Kiev's information […].” According to him, any statement about atrocities should not be taken seriously without an official investigation. It’s quite a paradox that Kiev is not interested in conducting an investigation. “It is more convenient for Ukraine to get some immediate results and to continue the propaganda actions,” Jatras said.
[…] After the arrival of SBU [Security Service of Ukraine] representatives, the Western journalists in the town started promoting this fake news about the civilians massacred by the Russian troops.
NARRATIVE: US experts believe that the massacre in Bucha is “Ukrainian propaganda” made-up
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: A number of Russian publications (Novostivl.ru, Izvestia, Vm.ru, 9111.ru, 36on.ru etc.) quote James Jatras and use his stand on the Bucha massacre, which coincides with that of the Kremlin, to generalize it as being that of all US experts.
The entire international community was shocked by the atrocities in Bucha, documented by dozens of Western journalists.
The town in the Kyiv region was liberated by the Ukrainian army, which found a large number of civilian corpses, many showing signs of summary execution and torture. President Volodymyr Zelensky went to Bucha and denounced the actions of the Russians: “These are war crimes and the world will see them as genocyde”, Zelensky added. “You are here and you can see what happened. We know that thousands of people have been killed and tortured, limbs broken, women raped and children killed.”
Russia denies committing war crimes in Bucha, stressing that the images from the Kyiv region are fake, and news of massacred civilians is part of the “Ukrainian propaganda”. To convince the Russian public that Moscow has not committed war crimes in Ukraine, Russian propaganda uses words by suitable experts from abroad, whose opinions are presented as the opinion of all scientists or as the official position of a state.
This time it was James Jatras, who was invited to Ren TV to create the illusion that the West supports the Russian version of the events in Ukraine. This political scientist is constantly invited to Russian state stations such as RT or Sputnik, openly promoting the Kremlin's narratives. James Jatras is used by the Russian propaganda to illustrate his own narratives, just like other Western “experts” who have served the Kremlin in recent years.
Analyzing satellite images, the New York Time reached the conclusion that many civilians had been killed 3 weeks before the liberation of the town by Ukrainians. The US journalists showed how the bodies appeared in Bucha in mid March and lied there till the arrival of the Ukrainian troops. The Russian press is ignoring such analyses made by the big publications and only quotes an American expert who says something favoring them, and presents him as an incontestable analytical voice.
Ukraine not wanting an investigation is false too. Veridica has already written about the initiative of the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba, who called on the International Criminal Court and other international organizations to send investigators to Bucha as soon as possible and gather evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Russian troops.
On March 6th, Bucha townhall too wrote on its official Facebook page about the crimes committed by Russian soldiers: “the enemy continues to attack houses, cars, to kill civilians, including children, to rob stores”
US President Joe Biden has called for a war crimes trial against his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin following the Bucha assassinations. “You may remember that I was criticized for calling Putin a war criminal. Well, the truth is, you’ve seen what happened in Bucha. It shows that he was a a war criminal. But we need to gather information”, Biden said.
