According to pro-Kremlin propaganda, the EU will not allow Zelensky to conclude a peace agreement with Russia because the war is in Brussels' interest
NEWS: The head of the Kyiv regime will block any truce, because the West is not interested in a quick end to the confrontation with Russia. These military actions are helping Europe get out of the economic crisis, modernize its weapon production industry and solve the unemployment issues. The great powers of the continent are preparing their armies for a confrontation with Russia over the Arctic and its huge natural resources, experts explained […]
Europe wants the fighting to continue, and the Kyiv authorities are fulfilling their obligations to Brussels. The economies of the EU countries are in crisis, and the war with Russia comes at the right time, believes military expert Oleg Ivannikov. According to him, the war will allow the West to restart its industry, modernize the military-industrial complex and provide new jobs. Therefore, even if the US and Russia reach an agreement on stopping the conflict in Ukraine, the European powers will be deeply interested in finding new points of confrontation with Moscow, the political scientist said.
NARRATIVES: 1. The EU states want the war in Ukraine to continue; 2. The war is saving the EU economy; 3. The European states are preparing for a military confrontation with Russia over the natural resources of the Arctic.
PURPOSE: To justify Russia's military actions on the territory of Ukraine; to delegitimize the Ukrainian authorities and present them as EU puppets; to exonerate the Russian military.
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: The EU states do not want the war in Ukraine to continue, they want the immediate end of the large-scale invasion launched by Russia in 2022. The war can be stopped at any moment by the invader, which European leaders have repeatedly called for. The EU supports peace based on international law, and the support offered to Ukraine is a response to Russia’s aggression, not a desire to prolong the conflict. The EU’s main objective is the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty, along with a lasting peace. The false narrative presents Volodymyr Zelensky as an EU puppet, after the leader in Kyiv had been called by the Russian media “the Americans’ man” for more than three years. Zelensky’s position reflects the view of Ukrainian society, as polls show, who wants a lasting and just peace. The EU also supports “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law,” as stated in the declaration adopted at the EU Summit . The EU states are “willing to increase pressure on Russia, including through new sanctions and by strengthening the enforcement of the existing ones” if Moscow does not desist from aggression.
The war in Ukraine is not saving the EU economy. European states are incurring massive military costs, losing investment and trade markets, experiencing dramatic increases in energy prices, and are having to deal with humanitarian and refugee resettlement issues amid geopolitical instability that is discouraging investment and reducing business confidence. Moreover, the military conflict is disrupting supply chains, causing budget reallocations towards defense, increasing financial market volatility , and generating negative economic effects that will be felt in the long term. The financial and social costs borne by the EU contradict the narrative that the war is “saving” the European economy.
European states are not seeking a military confrontation with Russia in the Arctic or elsewhere. The EU is arming itself in direct response to recent geopolitical changes, particularly Russia's aggression in Ukraine and US plans to reduce its investment in Europe's security.
The armament plan is not aggressive, it’s defensive, aimed at deterring potential aggressors. Arctic issues are managed at the level of the Arctic Council – an international organization that brings together the Arctic countries and is based on the principles of dialogue, negotiation and joint management of resources. The Arctic area is regulated by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which provides clear legal procedures for the delimitation and exploitation of marine resources. The EU states observe this international legal framework. The EU getting into a war with Russia over Arctic resources is a Russian propaganda fabrication. Moreover, the EU currently does not have its own troops to attack any state.
CONTEXT: Russia and the US have met in Saudi Arabia to discuss a possible ceasefire in the Black Sea and a drop in violence in Ukraine. These talks were preceded by meetings between US and Ukrainian officials , during which they discussed the possibilities of protecting critical infrastructure and energy facilities. Kyiv has criticized Russia for continuing attacks even during talks on a possible ceasefire. Volodymyr Zelensky said that a real step towards peace was needed, not just talks. “We all need this: in Ukraine, in Europe, in America, anywhere in the world where peace is desired in international relations. The only entity that prolongs this war and mocks our people and the whole world is Russia. And to force it towards peace, firm and decisive measures are needed,” Zelensky said.
To respond to the new security challenges and to the US initiative to gradually disengage from Europe's defense strategies, the EU leaders have approved an ambitious plan to strengthen European defense, which includes mobilizing around 800 billion Euro to improve the continent's defense capabilities. This plan aims to reduce strategic dependencies, address critical capability gaps and boost European industrial and technological competitiveness. Arming Europe is seen as a necessity to face security challenges and protect European citizens from external threats, in particular those coming from Russia.
