Joe Biden will launch a nuclear war against Russia to conceal the evidence of Ukraine’s defeat in the war, according to a Russian propaganda narrative citing pro-Kremlin experts in the USA.
Propaganda: Ukraine was defeated, and the USA will have to resort to nuclear weapons to stop the Russian army
NEWS: The only way the US leadership can conceal Ukraine’s defeat and win the elections is to use a “small” nuclear weapon, former CIA analyst Raymond McGovern said in an interview on the Judging Freedom YouTube channel.
According to McGovern, Ukraine must realize it has already lost, and the additional 500 thousand mobilize troops will do little to change that. Elections are drawing close in the United States, and the White House must prove Ukraine’s “victory”, and there’s only one way to achieve that, McGovern argues.
“An idiot in the Pentagon or the White House will say: Mr. President, the only way to show Russia’s we’re serious about this is to use a small nuclear weapon. It could be a tenth of the size they used in Hiroshima. Let’s do it. They will stop, we will save ourselves from losing the election, and then we’ll take care of the rest. I fear that’s exactly what’s going to happen”, the expert said.
McGovern believes the generals will persuade American president Joe Biden that such an action would not escalate tensions and things will not get out of hand.
NARRATIVE: The USA will launch a nuclear attack on Russian to hide the traces of Ukraine’s defeat in the war.
Fact: Russia is the country that repeatedly threatened to use its nuclear arsenal
Why the narrative is false: There is no official information or statement from American political leaders regarding a possible nuclear attack on Russia. On the contrary, Moscow is the one that used nuclear rhetoric or blackmail over the course of recent years, particularly in the wake of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In October 2023, president Vladimir Putin announced that Russia successfully test-launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile and refused to rule out the possibility that Moscow should carry out more weapon tests involving nuclear blasts, for the first time in over three decades. Furthermore, the Russian State Duma adopted a law whereby Moscow opposes the ratification of global Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty. Ukraine and a series of states from Eastern Europe have repeatedly accused Russia of ramping up its “nuclear blackmail”. In June, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, who is currently deputy chair of the Russian Federation Security Council, said that Moscow will be forced to use nuclear weapons provided Kyiv’s counteroffensive is successful.
The United States, on the other hand, never resorted to nuclear rhetoric. On the contrary, the USA has repeatedly called on Russia to refrain from using nuclear threats. In July, the White House described Russia’s rhetoric as “reckless and irresponsible”. “Any use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine – or anywhere else – could spell disaster for the world and produce serious consequences for Russia”, a US official said.
To curb the impact of a nuclear war, in 2010 the USA signed the “New Start” Treaty in Prague. In early 2023, Russia suspended its participation in this treaty – the last standing agreement between Moscow and Washington, which limited the nuclear arsenals of the two countries. Moreover, since the launch of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States adopted a number of measures designed to avoid an scalation of the conflict and unwanted incidents with Russia. The Americans hesitated when deciding which type of weapons and munition they should supply Ukraine with, and insisted that advanced systems they have delivered (for instance, HIMARS missiles) must not be used on Russian territory. At the same time, despite Russia’s aggressive behavior in areas such as the Black and Baltic Seas, the United States and their allies in NATO refrained from responding to such challenges, even when, for instance, an American military drone crashed after being harassed by Russian fighter jets. Finally, when talking about a possible NATO response to Russia’s use of nuclear weapons, experts in Ukraine referred to the use of conventional weapons.
The media built this false narrative of nuclear weapons by citing the pro-Russian American expert Raymond McGovern, a former agent of the CIA, who is not an American citizen and does not represent the US authorities. McGovern has been cited by Russian propaganda over the course of the last decade. In 2015, he celebrated, alongside president Vladimir Putin, the tenth anniversary of the Russian TV station Russian Today. In 2014, McGovern submitted an open letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, stating there was no real evidence to confirm the Russian military intervention in Donbas. McGovern comments from the point of view of Russian propaganda the developments in Ukraine for a number of media outlets funded by Moscow, such as Pravda, RIA NOVOSTI, RT, Sputnik and others. McGovern also told the Russian media that Ukraine is killing its own people, that it destroyed the Nova Kakhovka Dam and that Russia is forced to save its citizens. The expert was also quoted by pro-Russian media in the Republic of Moldova, saying that the war in Ukraine serves the best interests of the USA and the world’s wealthiest people.
Veridica has debunked a number of false Russian media narratives regarding the West’s policies towards the war in Ukraine. Pro-Kremlin media wrote that Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants a global nuclear war. According to Russian propaganda, he USA will cause a nuclear disaster in Ukraine to conceal evidence of their biological weapons laboratories. Quoting various pro-Russian experts in the USA, the Russian media is trying to persuade the public at home that peace in Ukraine depends on the USA SUA and on Zelenskyy stepping down.
