The CNA members analyzed the June 10, 2021, show, where the former MEP Adrian Severin was a guest. The conclusion of the forum: “lack of objectivity” on the part of moderator Cozmin Guşă”, Pagina de Media reports. The data presented before the CNA show that it was an “analysis based on accounts of the first European tour taken by the US President Joe Biden” in June 2021, and mind you, the summons was proposed by Mircea Toma. So, a former NGO member, from the category of those supported by Soros, decided that one of the most important foreign policy specialists, Adrian Severin, and the most active Romanian geopolitician were NOT allowed to criticize the USA!”, Sputnik Moldova reads.
NARRATIVES: 1. Romania is a US colony, not a strategic partner at the Black Sea. 2. All those who criticize the USA in Romania are going to be censored. 3. The CNA is a tool of censorship in the hands of George Soros.
LOCAL CONTEXT / ETHOS: The interests and attention of the international community have shifted in recent months towards Ukraine as well, where Russia has annexed Crimea and is creating constant tensions at the borders. The US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Taliban takeover are also portrayed and amplified by Russian propaganda as a defeat of the West.
Russian propaganda is trying to extrapolate the newly created situation in Afghanistan, saying that other allies too will be abandoned by the US, which is no longer a reliable partner.
At the same time, Russia is presented as a great power, with great leaders, ready to assume a role of superpower and arbiter in hotspots around the globe.
In other words, Russian propaganda finds more and more vectors and promoters in Romania among obscure public figures with legal problems following acts of corruption. Most of them accuse the judiciary of persecuting them at the behest of external forces and that the justice system is no longer controlled from within Romania, but from abroad.
CNA accused Cozmin Gușă of violating Article 64 of the Audiovisual Code, which states that by virtue of the public's fundamental right to information, audiovisual media service providers must abide by the following principles:
- a) to ensure a clear distinction between facts and opinions
- b) to make sure that information on a topic, fact or event is correct, verified and presented impartially and in good faith
Instead, Gușă complained that he was subjected to intimidation attempts by the CNA because he had criticized the USA.
PURPOSE: To induce the feeling that the US no longer enjoys freedom of expression and that this alleged model is exported to states with which Washington has partnerships.
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: In reality, the Gold FM station – which hosted the show moderated by Cozmin Gușă, and having as a guest the former Social Democrat MEP Adrian Severin, caught red-handed while taking bribe - was summoned by the CNA because during their talk no distinction could be made between information and opinion, which is contrary to the Audiovisual Law.
The show is a kind of an ironic dialogue between the two about the US, while at the same time glorifying Vladimir Putin's machismo in relation to an alleged weak West.
The CNA complaint covers no less than seven issues and topics that the two address subjectively in a way that has nothing to do with informing the public. All seven items are in fact Russian propaganda narratives that have been frequently tackled in analyses on disinformation and fake news debunked by Veridica.
Among them are narratives such as: The USA is no longer a democracy, but rather a dictatorship where there is no freedom of opinion; The USA and NATO no longer act in unison and they are growing apart; Russia is an accommodating country, and the states of the world are knocking on its door; American leaders are weak and the Russian ones are strong; NATO and the West betrayed Ukraine when Russia annexed Crimea.
The author also pushes several parallels, inferring that the CNA is a tool in the hands of the American billionaire George Soros, since the Active Watch activist Mircea Toma is now a member of the CNA. Mircea Toma has never hidden the fact that George Soros's foundations have supported some of his human rights projects, but this does not mean that the CNA member is subordinated to the interests of his NGO’s donors.
