Maia Sandu contributes to the moral degradation of the population by forcing them to attend events organized by the LGBT community, for the sake of European integration, according to a Russian deputy quoted by Sputnik.

NEWS: By means of her actions, the president of Moldova proves her loyalty and submission to the “collective West”, a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation argues.

The president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, is trying to use the LGBT parade to provoke the moral degradation of society in order to “push” for European integration, State Duma deputy and chairwoman of the Council of the “Eurasia” NGO, Alyona Arshinova told RIA Novosti.

“Sandu is trying to impose European integration by creating moral degradation. Moldovan citizens, unlike the “progressive” pro-Western Moldovan authorities, support traditional spiritual and moral values. Why, then, do the authorities break people's character and traditional values, forcing them to attend LGBT events? Sandu thus demonstrates her loyalty and submission to the "collective West", and moral degradation is necessary to distract people from the real chaos taking place in Moldova", Arshinova said.

NARRATIVE: The West imposes an LGBT agenda on the Republic of Moldova, which the pro-European administration (led by Maia Sandu) forces on the population.

PURPOSE: To discredit the EU and the pro-European administration in Chișinău. To associate the West / the EU with a so-called “LGBT agenda”, given that the majority of the population of the Republic of Moldova has a negative attitude towards this minority.

WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: Maia Sandu and the government had nothing to do with the LGBT community parade and did not speak out in its favor or against it. No one was forced to participate or follow the event.

The EU does not have a pro-LGBT agenda, but rather encourages observance of human rights and the rights of minorities, including sexual minorities.

The European Union does not impose any “LGBT agenda” on the Republic of Moldova. There were prerequisites related to ensuring the rights of minorities, including sexual minorities, which the Republic of Moldova has fulfilled since 2012. Representatives of the authorities in Chișinău have previously commented on the accusations about the alleged conditioning of same-sex marriages and the imposition of the “LGBT agenda”, dismissing them as false.

Previously, Veridica debunked several false narratives on this topic, including that the EU makes the Republic of Moldova’s EU accession conditional on the legalization of same-sex marriages or that Moldovan authorities shut down a TV station for promoting “traditional values”.

BACKGROUND: On June 15, Chișinău hosted the Pride parade organized by the LGBT community in the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, the pro-Russian opposition organized a so-called family march. Several people, especially priests, tried to block the parade of the LGBT community, and the police were forced to intervene.

Incidents were also reported in previous years, when participants were attacked with stones and eggs, streets on the route were blocked, or people were seized in means of transport. In 2008, the Pride parade was even banned.

Topics related to the LGBT community have been used for years by Russian propaganda (or by ultraconservatives influenced by its ideas, especially representatives of the Metropolitanate of Moldova, subordinated to the Russian Patriarchate) in its attempts to discredit the European Union and the pro-European governments in Chișinău. Thus, the EU is presented as “Gayrope”, a space at odds with traditional, Christian, Orthodox values, which Russia claims to represent. The public is mistakenly driven to equate homosexuality to pedophilia, to show the authorities seek to legalize pedophilia. Russian propaganda also suggests the EU is trying to impose a so-called “LGBT agenda”. And finally, Russian narratives seek to identify human rights, which represent a fundamental value of the European community, with the promotion and encouragement of non-traditional sexual relations.

Moldovan society, known for its rather conservative views, is highly sensitive about this subject. A 2022 study showed that LGBT people were the most marginalized social category, and the level of tolerance towards them had decreased.

However, an annual ranking compiled by ILGA-Europe, which examines the level of legal protection of LGBT people, shows that things have improved significantly in the Republic of Moldova in this regard in recent years, with the country ranking higher than some EU member states, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, and Romania.
