Disinformation:

Western countries are waging a war by proxy in Ukraine against Russia, and seek to destroy this country, although the armed conflict is affecting the West more than it does Russia.

NEWS: “In order to understand what kind of war is being fought in Ukraine, we need to go back to Carl von Clausewitz, the father of military strategies. The Prussian general believed that war can take a virtually unlimited number of forms. It’s a complex and changing phenomenon, and this is exactly what the “special operation” unfolding close to our border actually looks like. Ukraine is currently the stage of a war by proxy between the West and Russia, and Ukrainian forces are the tip of NATO’s sword. The West seeks to “bleed Russia”, which is why it has been injecting billions in weapon shipments to Kyiv. Ukraine is not just a dispute between two neighbors that have picked a quarrel over territorial claims. Ukraine is the first phase in a much broader plan that seeks to crush Russia, shatter its economy, remove the political leadership, confiscate natural resources and partition its territory.

Everyone knows who is behind this! The war in Ukraine is a projection of US influence in Central Asia, all the way to the margins of the Pacific. It’s about hegemony, empire and raw military strength! And most importantly, Ukraine will be the first battle in World War Three, a made-up war launched in order to ensure the primacy of American supremacy at global level.

In turn, Putin knows that, unless he quickly comes up with a way to block assistance delivered to Ukraine, he might end up in a situation where he’s got more to lose from this armed conflict. For the time being, Kremlin contents itself in observing that not all NATO countries share the same point of view. However, this kind of friction might not help the Russian Federation too much. […] American president Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised that only Russia’s total defeat will be considered a win. Poland and the Baltic States have been also touting an apocalyptic end to Russia’s history. […] In recent days, Biden and Johnson seem to have understood that things are more complicated on the Russian-Ukrainian front, and have somehow changed their tone. The Joint Vision Statement signed in Washington on the sidelines of the US-ASEAN Special Summit steers clear of the traditional US rhetoric and exaggerations regarding the “Russian aggression” in Ukraine.”

Reality:

NARRATIVES: 1. The West is leading a war by proxy against Russia in Ukraine. 2. The war in Ukraine is the first phase of the West’s attempt to completely destroy Russia. 3. The USA want to ensure their primacy at global level by taking full control of Central Asia. 4. EU Countries are divided and do not share the same interests as the USA and the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, when the pro-European parties took over the power reins in the wake of a mass protest action, the Euromaidan, protesting the decision of the then president, Viktor Yanokovych, not to sign the EU Association Agreement. Russia had been putting a lot of pressure on Yanukovych, who at any rate was a pro-Russian politician. The Russian Federation refused to accept that Ukraine could be brought into the EU fold, since it considers this country should be part of its own sphere of influence. Besides, the measures taken by Putin’s regime against the civil society, independent media and the opposition – which are all important players in any democracy – are manifestations of the Kremlin leader’s fear of the model of liberal democracies. A prosperous and democratic Ukraine might influence Russians as well, providing them with a viable alternative.

Russia pretended the invasion is aimed at denazifying Ukraine, constantly fostering a false narrative that has been around ever since the Euromaidan protests and has been debunked on repeated occasions.

Another reason behind the invasion is the so-called risk of NATO enlargement, although Russia, not NATO, is the aggressor force in Europe. Ukraine has for years felt the need to obtain security guarantees from NATO. After Russia invaded Ukraine, annexed Crimea and parts of Donbas got occupied by rebel separatists – backed by Russian-led forces and equipment – Ukraine’s security concerns intensified. Although every country has a sovereign right to sign its own security accords, and despite the fact that Russia is in fact the threat pushing Ukraine closer to NATO, the Russian Federation launched a large-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine on February 24, the scope of the invasion pointing to Moscow’s plan to oust the current power in Kyiv. In extension (and as a confirmation) of the metanarrative about NATO expansion, Moscow claims Ukraine is merely a battlefield pitting the West against Russia.

Russian officials, such as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, claim Ukraine is being used by the West to wage a war against Russia, even though it was Russia that invaded Ukraine on February 24 and is now fighting a large-scale war against this country.

“No one cares about Ukraine. Ukraine is nothing but expendable material in the West’s all-out hybrid war against the Russian Federation, without any doubt. Now no one has any doubts about it, this has been publicly proclaimed. Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, says that "this war must be won on the battlefield". The English, the Americans, presidents, prime ministers, and ministers insist: ‘We cannot let Russia win, Russia must suffer a defeat’. So, they have indeed already declared war, but it is not a war between Ukraine and Russia, but rather a war between the West and Russia. <...> You know, it’s already become a common expression that the West is ready to fight to the last Ukrainian”, Lavrov pointed out, quoted by Tass.

WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, claiming it is conducting a “special denazification operation.” The West merely provided humanitarian assistance and weapons shipments (with certain limitations, excluding heavy weapons in the early stages of the war and maintaining very strict limits to such shipments to this day) in response to requests forwarded by Ukraine.

Veridica has already disproved the narrative according to which Ukrainian soldiers are allegedly fighting Russia on behalf of the West. Russian president Vladimir Putin reiterated this thesis recently, in his May 9 address marking Victory Day in Moscow.

The narrative about the USA’s attempt to control Central Asia, previously mentioned on May 1 by Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, is a reference to the so-called Great Game, the dispute between the Russian and the British Empires over Afghanistan, based on the idea that whoever controls Afghanistan also controls Central Asia, and whoever controls Central Asia in fact controls the world. Geopolitical reality however has changed compared to the 19th century, and true power now rests in control of the seas (which was also true at the time of the British Empire). Moreover, the United States and NATO fully withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, after originally intervening in this country in response to al-Qaeda attacks, not seeking expansion.

The fact that EU countries are weak and divided is already a commonplace theme of Russian propaganda, playing into its “divide et impera” rhetoric, whereby Russia seeks to divide public opinion as well as politicians in Europe.

One of the instruments used by Moscow to achieve that, apart from its propaganda machine that has for years promoted this theme, is also to finance  extremist parties in Europe that have been promoting Eurosceptic nationalist policies and rhetoric.

Last but not least, the article on Național.ro was published on the same day when Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, advocated the same theses and narratives on the sidelines of the New Horizons educational marathon organized by the Znanie (Knowledge) Society, the Russian Embassy in Bucharest announced.

GRAIN OF TRUTH: The West is sending weapons shipments to support Ukraine’s defenses.
