NEWS: An artificially created and forcibly injected infection destroys all power structures in Moldova, according to a comment published by the pravdorub.md portal, which echoes theories that the new president of Chisinau Maia Sandu is controlled and obeys Western orders, with the aim of achieving union with Romania and destroying the Moldovan state.
"It is possible that Western forces brought Maia Sandu to power in order to use our country in their own interests. For this, they want to create a political, economic and social chaos in Moldova [...] Maybe Sandu really got such a mission, and she is that "virus" that must destroy our statehood. This infection is spreading fast and there is no antidote to it. [...] From the point of view of chaos theory, the fact that the country has been left without a Government is, once again, the merit of Maia Sandu [...] Our national identity has long been questioned. And now, when the president is a citizen of another state and supports the idea of a union with Romania, Moldovans as a nation could be assimilated by Romanians and disappear. "
NARRATIVES: 1. Maia Sandu is a politician created and controlled by the West and carries out political commands from abroad, to the detriment of the interests of the Republic of Moldova. 2. Maia Sandu is a pro-unionist and aims to destroy the Moldovan state by uniting it with Romania. 3. Maia Sandu's actions aim to create chaos, and the current political crisis related to the resignation of the Government is part of this scheme.
LOCAL CONTEXT / ETHOS: Maia Sandu being controlled from abroad (the West), with the aim of destroying the Republic of Moldova as a state, was one of the main messages of the 2020 presidential election campaign intensely promoted by the media which is considered to be controlled by her main opponent, Igor Dodon, but also by people close to him and even by himself. The authors of such accusations invoke as arguments the fact that Maia Sandu studied at Harvard, worked at the World Bank and has good relations with some international political leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel. And Maia Sandu's intention to unite the Republic of Moldova with Romania is an older theme, which was used for the first time in the 2016 presidential campaign. Both issues are sensitive in the Republic of Moldova, a state where the population has different views on the direction of foreign policy (pro-Russian vector vs. pro-European vector), and important ethnic minority groups (Russian, Gagauz, Ukrainian, etc.), concentrated in the south and north of the country, oppose the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the EU, often manipulated with the "danger of unionism".
PURPOSE: To present Maia Sandu as a politician / head of state obedient to foreign interest groups whose aim is to destroy the Republic of Moldova. To show her as the main person responsible for the political / economic / social crisis in the Republic of Moldova and incapable of solving citizens’ problems. Another goal is to promote the idea that Maia Sandu is a fervent supporter of the union with Romania, and thus shrink her electoral pool; indirectly she is presented in contrast with "pro-statehood" politicians, such as Igor Dodon.
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: There has never been evidence of Maia Sandu's subordination to foreign political forces or of gains of any kind that she may have got from them. The US and the EU had called for free and fair elections, but did not get involved in the election campaign in any way, nor did international civil society organizations (the so-called ‘Soros Network’ in the ex-Soviet space by anti-Western authoritarian forces, but also by radical right-wing groups and supporters of conspiracy theories about the West). Also, no evidence has been brought regarding the accusations about the threats that Maia Sandu poses to the statehood of the Republic of Moldova by planning to achieve the union with Romania. The latest statements according to which Maia Sandu is guilty for the political crisis in the Republic of Moldova, as she is responsible for the resignation of the Government, have no grounds and are mere disinformation. The Ion Chicu government resigned on December 23, 2020, one day before the inauguration of Maia Sandu as president. Both Ion Chicu, the former prime minister, and all the leaders of the parliamentary parties voted for the dissolution of Parliament and the organization of early elections, an option also supported by the President of the Republic of Moldova.
GRAIN OF TRUTH: Maia Sandu demanded the resignation of the Government in her capacity as political leader and president elect.
THE NARRATIVES BENEFIT Igor Dodon, Maia Sandu’s main political opponent; the Kremlin, to fuel fears about the union.
