The West is imposing "an anti-family ideology" on Moldova, says the leader of the Socialists, Igor Dodon. In the context of a Pride march, he resumed an old Moscow narrative regarding the "LGBT agenda".
NEWS: “Thousands of people took part in a procession and the March for Family in support of traditional values. The event was organized by the Party of Socialists, led by former president Igor Dodon, who will probably announce his candidacy for the presidential elections.
According to the organizers, the event was intended to be a response to the sodomites’ march, which was to take place on Sunday, with the participation of Western ambassadors [...] Year after year, our traditional values are threatened by foreign ideologies that try to impose an anti-family ideology. The time has come to show how important our Orthodox faith and our millennial traditions are to us. I am sure that the overwhelming majority of Moldovans appreciate our traditions handed down by our ancestors, our normal, traditional family, which consists of a mother, a father and children. Someone is trying to decide the future of our children, to impose foreign values on us. We will not allow this," said Igor Dodon during the rally" (Politnavigator)
"Gays and lesbians have become as much a part of the world agenda as Russophobia. In the Republic of Moldova, the population accepts neither one nor the other, but the Sandu regime is unable to say no to those who manipulate it.
The gay agenda in Moldova can only be stopped by a firm decision, which Maia Sandu has no desire to make. So this time the ruling majority simply did not participate in the parade, but provided protection and even sent special forces, which accompanied the entire column and protected it from the peaceful protesters." NARRATIVE: The West imposes the LGBT agenda on the Republic of Moldova.
LOCAL CONTEXT/ ETHOS: On June 16, the Pride march of the LGBT community in the Republic of Moldova took place in Chisinau. This year, the event gathered a record number of participants, according to the organizers - over 800. Even though it was preceded by counter-demonstrations and accompanied by protests during the march, no notable incidents were recorded as in previous editions, when participants were attacked with stones and eggs and denied access to some streets. Also, as it happened in 2008, they were blocked in means of transport and were not allowed to hold their event.
On the eve of this event, the pro-Russian Party of Socialists organized a so-called march for family , "in support of the traditional family and traditional values." At this event, several speakers, including PSRM leader Igor Dodon, accused the West of imposing "anti-family ideologies."
Topics related to the LGBT community have been used for years by the Russian propaganda (or by ultraconservatives influenced by it or with similar ideas, especially representatives of the Metropolitan Bishopric of Moldova, subordinate to the Russian Patriarchy) in its attempts to discredit the European Union and pro-European governments in Chisinau. Thus, the EU is presented as "Gayropa", a space in antithesis to that of traditional, Christian values, which Russia allegedly represents; a false equivalence is drawn between homosexuality and pedophilia, to convince the public that the goal is to legalize pedophilia; the idea of an "LGBT agenda" that the EU would try to impose is induced; finally, an attempt is made to identify human rights, which represent a fundamental value of the European community, with the promotion and encouragement of non-traditional sexual relations.
Moldovan society, which is quite conservative, is sensitive when it comes to this topic. A 2022 study showed that LGBT people were the most marginalized social group and the level of tolerance towards them had decreased.
However, an annual ranking compiled by ILGA-Europe, which evaluates the protection of LGBT people through legislation , shows that, in recent years, things have significantly improved in the Republic of Moldova in this regard with the country now ranking even higher than some member states of the EU, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Romania.
PURPOSE: To discredit the EU and the pro-European government in Chisinau. To associate the West/EU with a so-called "LGBT agenda", given that the majority of the population of the Republic of Moldova has a negative attitude towards this minority.
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: Accusations of promoting the LGBT agenda are a propaganda tool used to sensitize an important part of the mostly conservative Moldovan society. The narrative is generally based on the idea of the "decadent West", intensively promoted by the Kremlin, especially through the Russian Orthodox Church, which is also very influential in the Republic of Moldova.
The West/EU do not have a pro-LGBT agenda but a pro-respect for human rights and the rights of minorities, including sexual minorities.
The European Union does not impose any kind of LGBT agenda on the Republic of Moldova. Certain conditions were set in order to ensure the rights of minorities, including sexual ones, which the Republic of Moldova fulfilled back in 2012. Representatives of the authorities in Chisinau previously denounced the statements about the alleged conditionalities related to same-sex marriages and the imposition of the "agenda LGBT" as fakes.
Previously, Veridica had also debunked several fakes on this topic, including that the EU makes Moldova’s accession conditional on the legalization of same-sex marriages or that Moldovan authorities shut down a TV stations for promoting “traditional values”
GRAIN OF TRUTH: The EU and other Western institutions do promote the respect for human rights, including those of sexual minorities.
