Maia Sandu and the West want Moldovans to become second-class Romanian citizens, according to a politician from Gagauzia who demands that, in order to save the country, "pro-Moldovan" forces form a bloc. This is one of the false narratives reactivated in the context of the parliament election campaign in the Republic of Moldova.
NEWS: “Currently, the People’s Union Public Platform is being formed in the Republic of Moldova. A meeting to set up the platform will be held in the coming days, Victor Petrov, the founder of the Anti-Crisis Headquarters announced today, May 11, at a press briefing, which took place in Comrat”, IPN reports.
According to Petrov, negotiations will be started by the People’s Union Public Platform with the pro-Moldovan political parties, on the formation of a United Patriotic Bloc.
“With a constitutional majority, Moldova's patriots will be able to form a Moldovan sovereign government and begin the process of reviving the country, taking into account its secular traditions, return to the study of Moldovan history, strengthen the status of the Moldovan and Russian languages, rapidly grow the economy, improve the lives of citizens and return to warm relations with historical friends - Russia and other countries of the Eurasian Union”, Victor Petrov stressed.
According to Petrov, the movement includes hundreds of thousands of people from the ATU of Gagauzia, the Transnistrian region, but also from throughout Moldova, as well as “patriots living outside our homeland”, but who share the same ideas.
In the opinion of Victor Petrov [...] “Pro-Western parties and politicians, with the support of several embassies, interfere directly in the activity of the Constitutional Court, neglect the fundamentals of the Constitution, interpret court decisions in their own way - all these are a direct threat to the sovereignty and statehood of the Republic of Moldova. Under the guise of words and slogans about the importance of "European integration" and "European values", we are systematically led towards Romania, where we will all just become "second-rate" people and, as a Romanian diplomat put it, "owners of primitive Moldovanism"[...]”
NARRATIVES: 1. Pro-Western parties endanger the statehood and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, at the direction and with the support of several embassies. 2. Under “European integration” slogans, Moldovans are led towards Romania, where they will become “second-class” citizens; the new president, Maia Sandu, will unite Moldova with Romania and integrate it into NATO, demanding the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers.
CONTEXT: Early parliamentary elections in Moldova will take place on July 11th. Parliament was dissolved by presidential decree, because the deputies failed to appoint a Government, after the resignation of the former prime minister Ion Chicu.
The Chisinau parliament was dominated by the Socialist Party, led by former President Igor Dodon, which had the largest group in the legislature. Although it held the majority together with the deputies of the fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor, the PSRM-Shor coalition failed to promote its own candidate for prime minister. The Socialists tried to block the election, as both the party and Igor Dodon fell in the polls.
Once the Constitutional Court found that the conditions for the dissolution of Parliament were met and the election date was set, the attacks on Maia Sandu intensified, as she was advocating for a new, uncorrupted parliament to support her reforms and fight corruption.
After losing the presidency and government, Igor Dodon risks losing control of the future parliament as well. Under these circumstances, he’s called on the "pro-Moldovan" forces (left, pro-Russian, in fact) to unite, and has already managed to form an electoral bloc with the communists led by his former mentor, Vladimir Voronin. Although he harshly criticized Dodon after the latter left the Communist Party along with some members, Voronin accepted the alliance claiming the "statehood" of the Republic of Moldova was in danger.
Narratives of a West that wants to liquidate the Moldovan state, undermine traditional values and promote the LGBT "agenda", or about Romania leading the Republic of Moldova, etc. were used before, in last year's presidential campaign, and are intensely taken over during this pre-election period as well. Many come from the Russian Federation and are promoted by various pro-Russian parties and organizations. One of them is the Anti-Crisis Headquarters founded by Victor Petrov from Comrat, the Gagauz region, who stated during last year's campaign that he would not admit the West's interference in the elections in the Republic of Moldova.
The Gagauz region is an autonomous territorial-administrative unit within the Republic of Moldova. The population of this region is Russian-speaking and mostly connected to the so-called Russian world.
PURPOSE: To fuel phobias about the danger of the destruction of the Moldovan state, the union with Romania or accession to NATO. To undermine confidence in the West and in pro-European parties.
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: Moldova’s Western partners have never threatened the state’s sovereignty or territorial integrity; on the contrary, they have helped and supported Chisinau in promoting the rule of law and democratic values, called for the implementation of reforms and eradication of corruption in order to improve the lives of the Moldovan citizens.
The union with Romania or NATO accession have not been approached by either the Moldovan president Maia Sandu or the Western countries.
