Soros asked Maia Sandu to support Elena Lasconi, said a former pro-Russian prime minister from Chisinau after the USR (Save Romania Union) candidate obtained the majority of votes in polling stations in the Republic of Moldova.
NEWS: Benefiting from unprecedented support (and intervention) in elections from Mr. Ciolacu and Mr. Ciucă (PSD and PNL), Maia Sandu chose to follow Alex Soros' instructions and supported Lasconi with the help of PAS, writes former prime minister Ion Chicu on Telegram.
According to him, "the massive vote for Soros's candidate in our country led to the fact that Marcel Ciolacu became the biggest loser of these elections."
NARRATIVE: Maia Sandu and Elena Lasconi are controlled by the American billionaires Soros.
PURPOSE: To associate Maia Sandu and Elena Lasconi with the Soros family, often presented in negative colors by Russian and pro-Russian propaganda both in the Republic of Moldova and in Romania. Respectively, to reduce Elena Lasconi's electoral pool for the second round.
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: First of all, it must be stated that Maia Sandu, who, just like a million other Moldovan citizens, holds Romanian citizenship, did not express any political option regarding the presidential elections in Romania. However, the pro-presidential governing party, the Action and Solidarity Party, supported the former PNL leader Nicolae Ciucă, given that the two parties are part of the same European political family - EPP. The Chisinau press wrote before the first round that PAS also sent text messages urging citizens to vote for Nicolae Ciucă, a statement confirmed by party representatives.
During a visit to Chisinau before the elections, Nicolae Ciucă had meetings with both Parliament Speaker and PAS leader Igor Grosu, and Maia Sandu.
American philanthropist George Soros, and more recently his son, Alex, as well as the organizations they founded or finance are often demonized by Russian and pro-Russian propaganda and politicians affiliated with Moscow or alleged nationalists, including in the Republic of Moldova and Romania. In Chisinau, the Socialist deputy Bogdan Șîrdea is particularly keen on promoting false narratives about the so-called "Soros network" and its involvement in politics. He is the one who claimed that Soros created PAS, a narrative debunked by Veridica.
Similar narratives were also promoted in the campaign for the presidential elections in Romania. The press wrote that a television station headlined that Mircea Geoană and Elena Lasconi are “Soros’ and Coldea’s candidates” . The same post later claimed that Soros was the godfather of Lasconi and Bolojan. "A TV channel is using the name of the American billionaire George Soros as a scarecrow to bring electoral benefits to the AUR candidate, George Simion. Soros’ name is also used by Moscow in extensive propaganda and intoxiation actions directed against Western countries", according to presshub.ro.
LOCAL CONTEXT/ETHOS: In the presidential elections in Romania, the Romanian citizens in the Republic of Moldova voted very differently than those in the country. Of the more than 81,000 who voted at the 59 polling stations on the left of the Prut River, some 57% voted for Elena Lasconi, followed by Nicolae Ciucă - 20% and Marcel Ciolacu - less than 7%. Only slightly more than 3 percent voted for Călin Georgescu in the Republic of Moldova.
Ion Chicu, a former prime minister (2019-2020) during the socialist government and the pro-Russian president Igor Dodon, is one of the harshest critics of the current pro-European government in Chisinau.
