Minors of any age will be able to decide their own gender without the consent of their parents or doctors, claims a false narrative spread by ultra-conservative propagandists.
NEWS: The European Commission has launched a new " LGBTIQ+ Equality strategy” for 2026–2030, which has triggered a huge wave of controversy. The document proposes the legal recognition of gender based on self-determination—without age restrictions. In other words, children could decide for themselves what sex they are, and parents or doctors would no longer have the right to intervene.
The strategy also recommends banning exploratory therapy for minors—those psychological discussions that can verify whether the desire to transition is real or temporary. Thus, any attempt at assessment could be labeled as "discrimination."
While Brussels is rewriting the rules of biology, the government in Bucharest remains silent. Neither the government nor the presidency has communicated a clear position. Romania, in the midst of an economic and moral crisis, risks blindly adopting directives that directly affect family values and parental rights.
Instead of defending the family and children, Europe is losing its compass, confusing freedom with ideology. And governments—in complicit silence—are watching as the notion of biological sex disappears from legislation in the name of progress.
NARRATIVE: Children will be able to decide for themselves what gender they are, without their parents being able to intervene.
PURPOSE: To undermine trust in European institutions, promote discrimination and stigmatization of the LGBTIQ+ community, provoke anti-system social movements, and amplify ultra-religious and ultra-conservative propaganda.
Recommendations, by definition, are not binding
WHY THE NARRATIVE IS FALSE: The document adopted by the European Commission on October 8, 2025, has the overall objective of strengthening the rights and equality of LGBTIQ+ people in the European Union and serves as a guideline for member states. The LGBTIQ+ equality strategy 2026–2030 does not automatically change national legislation and does not create direct legal obligations. Instead, it provides a guiding framework for Member State authorities, which remain sovereign in sensitive areas such as the protection of minors, parental consent, or legal gender recognition.
Therefore, the strategy only recommends accessible and transparent procedures for the legal recognition of the gender of transgender and intersex persons, and there is no obligation in any paragraph to allow children to declare another gender without their parents' consent. Furthermore, the European Commission has officially clarified that Member States retain exclusive competence to set the minimum age and conditions for such procedures. "The strategy does not contain any provision requiring Member States to amend their legislation on the age at which children can apply for legal gender recognition. Competence in these areas remains exclusively at the national level," said European Commission spokeswoman Eva Hrnčířová at a press conference. This means that Romania or any other member state can choose to implement measures inspired by the EU strategy or not to implement them at all, without legal sanctions.
In fact, as always, ultra-conservative propaganda uses this strategy to create fear and the feeling that Brussels is "interfering in the education and lives of children, undermining Christian values and the traditional family."
Transgender people, enemies of orthodoxy
CONTEXT: The narrative analyzed aligns perfectly with the meta-narrative that is part of Moscow's propaganda war against the European Union, which claims that the Union "has fallen morally and strayed from Christian values." The EU is presented as a space that is antithetical to the traditional, Christian, Orthodox values that Russia supposedly represents. Through ambiguous and allusive wording or omissions of information, almost any event, no matter how insignificant, is thus linked to the "destruction of Christianity" and the identification of LGBTQ+ ideology as the "ultimate evil" through which the global cabal wants to subjugate all of humanity. Similar disinformation has been circulating in the public sphere for years. Two years ago, anti-LGBTIQ+ propaganda claimed that the World Health Organization was seeking to sexually mutilate children.
The 4media.info portal is part of a "network of lies" coordinated by the extremist group AUR. In fact, conspiracy rhetoric is specific to the entire so-called "sovereignist" spectrum—politicians, publications, influencers, etc.—which over time has regularly promoted false narratives about gender identity, as well as international health policies and the war in Ukraine and the risks it poses to Romania.
