
The Foreign Minister of the separatist region of Transnistria suggested that Moldovan authorities might denounce the 1992 Ceasefire Agreement, which could trigger a new war in the region. Chișinău, however, has never expressed its intention to denounce the Agreement, despite the fact that some of its provisions are not observed.
NEWS: These days we celebrate 30 years since the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement which de jure marked the end of the war in Transnistria. It was signed in 1992 by the presidents of Russia and the Republic of Moldova, B. Yeltsin and M. Snegur, respectively. At the time, Russian peacekeepers were brought to the region, which have since guaranteed peace in Transnistria. Nevertheless, the current lawmakers in the Republic of Moldova have been increasingly speaking about “the need to evacuate the Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria”.
[…] The Foreign Minister of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic said in an interview for RIA Novosti that, should Chișinău decide to denounce the 1992 Agreement, it could trigger a war in the region. According to Vitaly Ignatiev, such a decision could be the prologue to an armed conflict”.
