The European Union wants to fight tax evasion and undeclared work, which is a form of totalitarianism, says the ideologue of the pro-Russian Party of Socialists, widely covered by the affiliated press.
NEWS: “Welcome to Europe! In recent years, following the logic of the Association Agreement, dozens of laws have been adopted on preventing and combating money laundering, terrorism, etc.
In fact, the European Union has imposed a lot of conditions on Moldova to control citizens' cash, which means restricting their freedoms.
Now it will be difficult for illegal migrant workers, workers in the shadow sector, taxi drivers, housekeepers and hundreds of thousands of citizens working for them… it will be difficult to make a bigger purchase - a car, an apartment, etc.
And soon you won't even be able to buy socks - they'll ask where the money comes from!
The European Union imposes absolute control over citizens' money and earnings, it will be ten times worse than it once was in the USSR. This is real totalitarianism, not what we were told about the USSR, Cuba and so on”, reads a comment by the Socialist deputy from Chisinau Bogdat (Bogdan) Țîrdea, known for his criticism of the West. His comment was published on the website of the Party of Socialists in Russian and translated into wooden Romanian language, after which it was taken over, word for word, by a number of media institutions considered to be affiliated to PSRM such as Accent TV, Moldova Suverană, Primul în Moldova, Sinteza.org, etc.
NARRATIVES: 1. The European Union imposes harsh restrictions on the citizens of the Republic of Moldova regarding the origin of money, which restricts their freedoms. 2. The EU's efforts to combat money laundering, tax evasion and undeclared work are a form of totalitarianism. 3. The EU is an area where individual freedoms are violated and citizens controlled.
CONTEXT / LOCAL ETHOS: In 2021, legal changes come into force, which limit the volume of cash transactions for natural persons to 100,000 Moldovan lei (less than 5,000 EURO), a controversial provision, but voted even by PSRM and, most likely, by Țîrdea himself.
The PSRM deputy Bogdan Țîrdea, who, among other things, introduces himself as a political scientist, is known for his anti-West comments. In October 2020, in the middle of the election campaign, he launched a book about the network of NGOs financed from abroad, "with a strong interference in the internal affairs of the country".
During the election campaign, Bogdan Ţîrdea was one of the spokespersons for Igor Dodon's camp and launched numerous attacks in the press against his opponents, describing them as citizens of other countries, who act to the detriment of the state, of traditional values, who have connections with the "Soros network" etc.
The population of the Republic of Moldova is divided with regard to the vector of foreign policy, with the government permanently alternating parties declared pro-Western and pro-Russian respectively. Against this background, criticism of the European Union, often through misinformation and manipulation, is common, including on the part of politicians.
A large part of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova works unofficially or illegally, so that, according to a study conducted by the National Institute of Economic Research, in 2014 the share of the unobserved (gray) economy accounted for about a quarter of the GDP.
OBJECTIVE: To present the EU as an organization that imposes restrictions to the detriment of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. To present the EU as an area whose values and interests do not coincide with those of Moldovan citizens. Indirectly, by analogy with the USSR, to present Russia as a freer state from a financial point of view and closer to the realities of the Republic of Moldova.
WHY THE NARRATIVES ARE FALSE: Certain limitations for cash operations exist in most countries around the world, including the Russian Federation, the economic analyst Veaceslav Ioniță has told Veridica.ro. Also, he has recalled that it was not the European Union, but the government supported by the Socialists that proposed, and they endorsed, the budgetary-fiscal policy for 2021, which limits cash transactions for natural persons to 100 thousand lei (about 5,000 euros).
"Such restrictions are in place in virtually all countries, including the Russian Federation, and not just the EU. But the latest restrictions in the Republic of Moldova were voted including by Mr. Țîrdea. For honest people, even for those who do not work officially, these restrictions are not a problem. Those who commit tax evasion should worry", Veaceslav Ioniță has said.
Combating tax evasion, money laundering and undeclared work has many advantages: it helps increase state revenues and build a healthy and competitive economy, helps reduce corruption, creates an attractive environment for foreign investors, strengthens the rights of workers who, if legally employed, benefit from the protection of the law and the services and facilities guaranteed by it.
A GRAIN OF TRUTH: The legislation does provide for restrictions on cash transactions for natural persons, but they were proposed by the government supported by PSRM and voted by Bogdan Țîrdea's party colleagues.
